Matthew "Matt" Abram Groening [ ˈgreɪnɪŋ ] (born February 15, 1954 in Portland , Oregon , United States ) is the inventor of the cartoon series The Simpsons , Futurama and Disenchantment as well as the comics Life in Hell .

Life

Groening visited after high school in Portland from 1972, the Evergreen State College in Olympia in the state of Washington and made 1977 his Bachelor of Arts degree. He wrote articles and drew cartoons for the campus newspaper The Cooper Point Journal . In the early 1980s, Matt Groening worked as a music journalist , where he primarily reviews about Reggae - albums published. He was a business partner of CC Smith , the co-founder of Beat magazine .

Groening is a member of the American rock band Rock Bottom Remainders , which is made up of well-known writers and cartoonists. The band includes Dave Barry , Scott Turow and Stephen King , among others .

Before Groening worked for television , he created the comic series Life in Hell , which is now printed in around 250 newspapers. This is how James L. Brooks became aware of him. He offered Groening in 1985 to draw something for the Tracey Ullman Show . In the building while he was waiting for the interview, Groening learned that he should have prepared something new and extraordinary. So he drew the characters for the series in 15 minutes. It is said that he had the idea that Homer works in a nuclear power plant . First, from 1988 onwards, the Tracey Ullman Show broadcasted short films of the Simpsons that were 30 to 60 seconds long . This was so well received that 20th Century Fox and the film company Gracie Films commissioned the production and broadcast of a 30-minute show. On December 17, 1989, the first episode of the series ran on the US TV station Fox. Groening's best-known work alongside the Simpsons is the animated series Futurama .

Matt Groening claims to be an agnostic . A well-known quote from Groening is also: “ When asked 'Is there a God?' 'If there is, all evidence indicates that he hates me.' ”(German:“ When I am asked: 'Is there a God?' 'If there is a God, all the signs speak that he hates me.' ").

Groening's father Homer Philip Groening is German and his mother Margaret Ruth (née Wiggum) is of Norwegian descent. For the Simpson family's first names, he used those of his own family (according to himself, he wasn't feeling very creative that day).

The last name of the Springfield Police Chief Clancy Wiggum is the maiden name of Groening's mother.

Groening didn't want to use his own name for the Simpsons characters, so he chose Bart . This name is an anagram of Brat , English for brat, bellows . The character of Bart is based on Groening's nephew. Groening has won numerous awards with the Simpsons , including a. the Emmy .

Of the Simpsons and there are successful comics, including the Simpsons Comics and Bart Simpson -Soloreihe, also some one-shots that u itself. a. dedicate each to one of the Simpsons characters such as Abraham Simpson or Moe Szyslak.

Matt Groening has created one of the most successful cartoon series with the Simpsons . With over 600 episodes produced in more than 30 years, the series is also the longest-running US animated series ever.

Groening's style is characterized by the fact that all of his figures have bulging eyes and an overbite.

On February 14, 2012, Matt Groening was awarded a star on the Walk of Fame for the broadcast of the 500th Simpsons episode . The star is close to the star that the Simpsons got back in 2000.

Groening is a second marriage and has three children from a second marriage and two sons from a first marriage.
