The Longest Daycare (engl. The Longest Daycare ) is a four and a half minutes of American 3D animated short silent film and an offshoot of the animated series The Simpsons from the year 2012. After the animated film The Simpsons - The Movie is The Longest Daycare the second Simpsons movie ever and the first to use 3D technology . In addition, the film is the first of several announced short films with the Simpsons.
The main character is Maggie Simpson . Directed by David Silverman ; the film is being awarded in the country of production by 20th Century Fox .
The longest day of daycare in the United States was shown as the supporting film for Ice Age 4 - Fully Postponed from July 13, 2012 . Both films were released in Germany on July 3rd.
action
Maggie Simpson is brought to the Ayn Rand School for Tots daycare center by Marge - after which she broke out of there. There Maggie is scanned and her IQ is classified as average ("average intelligence"). Therefore, she is not placed in the room with the gifted children, which is bright, colorful and full of toys, but in a bare, dark room. Here Maggie could paint with colors, but the selection is limited to different shades of gray. In addition to a child who eats the colors, Maggie also meets her archenemy Baby Gerald, who scares her. It kills all the butterflies that fly into the room and that Maggie enjoys.
Maggie finds a pink caterpillar in the room that she wants to protect from Baby Gerald. He's after Maggie and her discovery, so that she pretends, among other things, that the caterpillar is her continuous eyebrow. Soon, however, the caterpillar begins to pupate and is attached to a small plant in a flower pot in the room. Maggie grabs the flower pot and escapes through the daycare. The other children help her and the pupa soon turns into a blue butterfly during the race. He flies to the window. Suddenly Baby Gerald drops the blind and crushes the butterfly on the window sill. Maggie mimics a dramatic, emotional breakdown, and baby Gerald triumphs. Maggie is picked up by Marge. In the car it turns out that the butterfly survived - instead of her blue bow, it sits in Maggie's hair and finally flies away from the car window. Baby Gerald finds only Maggie's ribbon on the windowsill and is furious.
production
The idea of producing an animated short film about The Simpsons came from executive producer James L. Brooks . As Al Jean reported, the short film should be reminiscent of productions by Pixar Animation Studios , as well as older cartoons. The film's director, David Silverman, previously did the job on The Simpsons . The producers' choice to put Maggie in the spotlight in the film was due to the fact that while it was difficult to star her in a 20-minute episode, a four-minute clip would be just right.
marketing
In the 508th episode of The Simpsons , Lisa Goes Gaga , Fox announced that The Longest Daycare Day will come out in 3D. A 16-second teaser trailer and an official trailer were released for the short film shortly before it was released. The latter described itself as the "shortest trailer of the summer".
criticism
“For the dismantling of the social Darwinist-looking image of society that many fringe supporters share, short impressions without any dialogue are sufficient - just note the telling contrast between the rooms of the supposedly gifted and the dark room for the contemptuously neglected other children. This socio-critical dimension naturally bypasses the smallest of the 'Ice Age' viewers, who are more likely to be carried away by the lively music of Hans Zimmer, but when in the end compassion prevails against the ruthless egoism without any fuss, that is universal understandable message. Conclusion: Four minutes of 'The Simpsons' as we love them: disrespectful, resourceful, funny and clever. "
Criticism and assessment of the nomination in the category “Best Animated Short Film” at the Oscars 2013:
“The narrative tempo of the film, captured like a cartoon on small, moving screens, is classically framed by the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, who already contributed the music for the movie and not, as expected, Danny Elfman, from whom the world-famous theme music for the Simpsons comes. Hans Zimmer increases his arrangement according to the plot and sets an exclamation mark towards the end by allowing his composition to merge into the dramatic "Ridi, pagliaccio" by Leoncavallo. With this instrumental allusion to the world-famous opera aria, the short film also finds a worthy end, although I do not believe that it has any great Oscar chances compared to the overwhelming competition. "
Awards
The longest day in daycare was nominated for an Oscar ( best animated short film ) and an Annie Award in 2013.
Trivia
