The first season of the American animated series The Simpsons was broadcast from December 17, 1989 to May 13, 1990 on the US broadcaster Fox . The German-language free TV first broadcast was broadcast by the public broadcaster ZDF from September 13 to December 13, 1991.

The season was released on DVD on September 25, 2001 in the United States and on September 27, 2001 in Germany.

After Bart secretly gets a tattoo, Marge spends the family's savings to get the tattoo removed . Homer doesn't get a Christmas bonus from his employer this year. He takes a job as Santa Claus so he can buy Christmas presents. However, since the job does not bring in much money, Homer goes to the Springfield dog racing track and bets on a dog named Knecht Ruprecht, who however loses. The owner chases the unsuccessful dog away, Homer picks him up and thus saves the Simpsons' festival because he can now present the dog as a gift.

During an IQ test, Bart exchanges his answers with those of the best in class, Martin Prince . Due to the outstanding result, the school psychologist transfers him to a school for gifted children. There, however, he has difficulty making friends with the other children. His old friends also avoid him because they don't want anything to do with a smart child. Ultimately, he confesses to the fraud and goes back to the old school.

Homer is fired after causing an accident at the nuclear power plant while visiting Bart's school class. After his family was nearly run over by a car, he campaigned for more traffic signs all over Springfield and eventually protested the power plant as the biggest security risk in town. To end the protest, Mr. Burns hires Homer back to the nuclear power plant - as a safety inspector .

Annoyed by his family's bad behavior at Burns' employee picnic, Homer takes Dr. Marvin Monroe's family therapy with. In order to be able to pay the therapy costs, he even sells his television set. The therapy fails completely and so Dr. Monroe reimbursed the family for double the cost of what they would buy a new television on under a commercial promise. This episode was the first to be broadcast in Germany.

Bart is beaten up by school thug Nelson Muntz after advocating for his sister. Since this wasn't the first time, Bart decides to do something about it. With the help of Grampa Simpsons, he and other children set up a kind of army . The war, carried out with water balloons and water pistols, ends with a peace agreement .

Lisa feels left alone and is depressed. In the school orchestra, too, she attracts attention negatively with her weird tones. One evening she hears saxophone music from afar , follows her and meets "Bleeding Gums Murphy" on a bridge. He helps her to express herself with the music. Lisa sings a song, complaining about her family, which Murphy bleeding gum sings at one of his appearances at the end of the episode. Meanwhile, Homer tries to hit Bart at a video game and even takes tuition in an arcade.

Envious of Flanders' new motorhome , Homer also buys one and goes on a trip with the family . After the caravan falls into a ravine, the family gets lost in the forest and has to make ends meet in the wilderness. After a series of mishaps, Maggie is taken in by bears and Homer (without clothes and smeared with mud) is mistaken for Bigfoot . He is hunted and held for scientific research.

Dolph, Jimbo, and Kearney tell Bart that they'd think it would be cool if someone decapitated the statue of Jebediah, the city's founder. Since Homer Bart also said that being popular is the most important thing in life, Bart secretly saws off the statue's head on the night. This act caused outrage in the city the following day. Bart feels guilty and confesses to his family that he is the decapitator. Together with his father, they want to bring the head back, but are caught by all the residents of Springfield. Bart tries to appease the pack and tells the whole story. The English-language title and the plot of the episode is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Telltale Heart (German: Das verräterische Herz ).

After Homer gave Marge a bowling ball with his name on her birthday , she is mad at him. She therefore keeps the ball and goes bowling with it. There she meets Jacques Brunswick, with whom she develops an affair . Bart and Lisa also understand that a serious marital crisis is looming. Marge is finally invited to his apartment by Jacques, but she decides to visit Homer at work, where they are happily reunited.

Bart gets a spy camera and uses it to photograph Homer at a bachelorette party with a belly dancer named Princess Kashmir . The picture spreads across the city and leads to Homer and Marge arguing. Homer eventually has to stay with Barney. The next day, Marge demands from Homer that he take Bart to the belly dancer so that Bart can get to know her personally and respect her. However, Homer ends up on stage during a performance by the belly dancer. Homer initially enthusiastically joins the show after the audience recognizes him. Finally, Homer gives a speech and calls on the audience to respect women. Marge, who appears in the meantime, is moved by this speech and forgives Homer.

After a prank at school that affects Principal Skinner's mother, Bart is sent to France as an exchange student , where his host parents use him to work hard on a winery. Bart discovered that Cesar and Huguolin the wine with antifreeze stretch and reports it to the police. Meanwhile, an Albanian student named Adil Hoxha, who is coming to the US in return, shows interest in Homer's job at the nuclear power plant and spies on him. Adil is eventually arrested by the FBI .

Homer goes to the Kwik-E market for shopping, while Marge's sisters are at home to show a slide show of their latest trip. Eventually, Krusty the Clown is arrested for a robbery in the Kwik-E market and Homer of all people becomes the main witness against Bart's greatest TV star. But Bart doesn't think that Krusty would have done it, but that someone put the blame on him. Because of his shoe size, Krusty's innocence can be proven, instead Tingeltangel-Bob is arrested.

Marge calls in Dr. Marvin Monroe's radio show complaining about Homer. Homer makes fun of the caller at first, but when he realizes that it is Marge, he gets flowers for her and invites her to a romantic evening. They hire a babysitter for Bart and Lisa, who turns out to be one of the most wanted robbers in the USA. After Miss Botz has cleared the Simpsons house, she is overwhelmed and tied up by the children. Meanwhile, Homer and Marge come home because the children couldn't answer their calls. They free the gagged Miss Botz because they believe in a prank by the children and even pay her three times the agreed amount. When the police and reporters arrive, the "babysitter bandit" has already disappeared.
