Samuel "Sam" Michael Simon (born June 6, 1955 in Los Angeles , California - † March 8, 2015 ) was an American television producer. Together with James L. Brooks and Matt Groening , he produced the first two seasons of The Simpsons .

Life

Simon graduated from Stanford University in 1977. He began his career in the early 1980s as a screenwriter, including for the sitcoms Taxi and Cheers , and later supervised both series as a producer. Between 1988 and 1990 he worked as executive producer on the Tracey Ullman Show , in which the animated series The Simpsons had its premiere as a short film. When the broadcaster decided to produce the Simpsons as an independent television series, Simon was one of the main ideas behind Matt Groening. Simon developed the characters Mr. Burns and Dr. Hibbert . After the end of the fourth season, Simon left the series due to irreconcilable differences of opinion with Groening. Although he had not worked on the series since 1993, he was still named as an executive producer and received several million dollars annually for it.

From 1984 to 1997 Simon was married to Jennifer Tilly . For many years he was committed to his foundation, which rescues street dogs and advocates the education of disabled people. He was the manager of former WBO world champion Lamon Brewster and was nominated as the world's best boxing manager in 2004. He supported Sea Shepherd , who named their ship Sam Simon - a former Japanese research vessel - after him in 2012 .

As a hobby poker player, Simon took part in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas several times . At the beginning of March 2010, he won a poker tournament in Los Angeles with a prize of just under 60,000 US dollars . Overall, he earned more than $ 350,000 in prize money.

In November 2012, Simon was diagnosed with colon cancer. He made this public in July 2013 and announced that he would donate all of his assets to charity. Simon died on March 8, 2015 of complications from cancer.
