The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society , or Sea Shepherd for short , is an environmental protection organization based in Friday Harbor , Washington , which is particularly committed to protecting the oceans , fighting illegal fishing , killing marine mammals , turtles and wild salmon , as well as the pollution of the seas. It is financially and legally independent of the international marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd Global .
history
Sea Shepherd was founded in 1977 by Paul Watson after he had left the environmental protection organization Greenpeace , one of which he was one of the first members, in a dispute. During a protest against the seal hunt in 1977 on the ice off the coast of Canada , Watson had thrown the hides and the club of a seal hunter into the water. Thereupon a dispute arose within the organization about the use of force, as a result of which Watson left Greenpeace.
The Sea Shepherd Society was created like other groups like Earth First! in the Reagan era against the background of the deep ecology approach. The groups advocated grassroots approaches and differentiated themselves from established US environmental organizations with more radical approaches.
In 1978 the company acquired its first ship, an Atlantic trawler , which was renamed Sea Shepherd after being converted . The Sea Shepherd is the first ship to campaign for seals. Your crew sprayed over 1000 seals with an ecological, insoluble paint. This made their fur worthless to the seal hunters.
In 1981 Sea Shepherd documented illegal Soviet whaling activities and presented evidence to Congress .
In 1982 the Sea Shepherd Islands Trust was founded and acquired the Orkney island of Green Holm. This was made a sanctuary for gray seals .
In 1991 a Sea Shepherd ship named Sea Shepherd II went to Trinidad and Tobago to take action against illegal driftnet fishing . Shortly after the Sea Shepherd II spotted a Taiwanese driftnet fisherman, she was rammed by him. Paul Watson then dropped the Sea Shepherd II and now rammed the Taiwanese ship. Upon their return, the Sea Shepherd crew was ceremoniously received and appointed official helper to the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard . The Sea Shepherd II crew helped the Coast Guard investigate and uncover bribery of Trinidadian government officials by the Taiwanese fishing industry. As a result, several government officials who accepted bribes were arrested.
In 1999 volunteers traveled to France and Turkey in cooperation with other aid workers and aid organizations to rescue birds smeared with oil from tanker accidents.
In 2000, Sea Shepherd coordinated the rescue of wildlife after a leak in an oil pipeline near Rio de Janeiro .
Also in 2000, Sea Shepherd provided the park authorities with a ship called the Sirenian and its crew to protect the Galapagos Islands National Park .
After a tank accident in 2001, the Sirenian was the first to arrive at the scene of the accident and supported the team from the Galapagos Islands National Park and the US Coast Guard with the clean-up work.
With national park rangers on board, the Farley Mowat caught an Ecuadorian longliner poaching off the Cocos Islands in 2001 . Around 50 km of longlines including illegal catches and the ship were confiscated. Sea Shepherd also managed to uncover a corruption scandal within the Ecuadorian Navy.
In 2004, the Farley Mowat helped arrest a Costa Rican longliner, an Ecuadorian gillnet fisherman and an American / Ecuadorian tuna fisherman. The Sea Shepherd crew cut and opened the tuna fisherman's net and released approximately ten tons of illegal catch.
In 2007 Sea Shepherd Galapagos Director Sean O'Hearn carried out raids on mainland Ecuador. 45,000 shark fins and 92,000 sea cucumbers are seized. As a result, over a dozen poachers were arrested.
In 2010 Sea Shepherd freed 800 bluefin tuna illegally caught by the Fish & Fish fishing company as part of Operation Blue Rage . As a result, the company in question sued Sea Shepherd for one million euros in compensation. Fish & Fish lost the case and in turn had to pay Sea Shepherd over € 250,000 to compensate the organization for the legal costs incurred.
There are now 20 country groups. To coordinate this, the international marine protection organization Sea Shepherd Global was founded. This now coordinates finances, logistics, communication and fleet for all country groups, except for the Sea Shephard Conservation Society. The CEO took Alex Cornelissen .
Anti-whaling campaigns in Antarctica
The first campaign in Antarctica took place in 2002–2003. However, the Japanese whaling fleet was not found.
In 2005-2006 the Farley Mowat found the Japanese whaling fleet for the first time as part of Operatian Antarctica . She fled, was prevented from whaling for 15 days and could not reach the quota that she had set herself.
Operation Leviathan 2006–2007 was Sea Shepherd's first two-ship campaign. The organization managed to divert the Japanese whaling fleet. This remained below its quota.
In 2008, an Australian court banned whaling in Australian waters. On the day the judgment was pronounced, Sea Shepherd helped two Sea Shepherds, Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane, board a Japanese harpooner to deliver a letter to the captain. In the letter, the captain was advised that by killing whales he and his fleet were breaking both international and Australian law. The two Sea Shepherd activists were then detained on the ship against their will. A video shows how the two activists were first to be thrown overboard and, when that did not succeed, they were tied to the railing . After 3 days the two activists were brought back to Australia. The action had stopped the Japanese fleet and attracted unwanted media attention. But Sea Shepherd has also been criticized for provoking a diplomatic scandal. The incident occurred during Operation Migaloo 2007-2008, Sea Shepherd's fourth anti-whaling campaign. The Japanese whaling fleet remained 500 under the quota it had set itself this year. Operation Migaloo was also the first campaign to be accompanied by an Animal Planet camera team and thus forms the basis of the first season of Whale Wars . According to his own account, Paul Watson was shot in the chest on Friday March 7th, 2008 during an incident involving the Japanese Coast Guard during the campaign. According to him, the bullet was stopped by his Kevlar vest. During the campaign there was a direct confrontation between the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin and the whaler Nisshin Maru . This incident can be seen in the last episode of the first season of Whale Wars . Then Watson stood on the deck of the Steve Irwin while his crew threw small bottles filled with butyric acid onto the Nisshin Maru . You can see how the Japanese threw back stun grenades . Then Watson shows his jacket and the bulletproof vest on the bridge and says: "I was hit". You can see him pulling a round metal ball out of his vest. The Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research dismissed as a lie the claim that the Japanese Coast Guard used live ammunition. The institute and the Japanese coast guard stated that the flares were exclusively pyrotechnic objects that produce a noise and light effect without being able to injure anyone. These flares would also be used in demonstrations. The case has not been investigated by any independent body. On the same day there were two press releases from the Australian Foreign Office. According to the first, the Australian embassy in Tokyo was informed by the Japanese that "warning shots" had been fired. In a later version, the expression "'warning balls' - also known as 'flashbangs' - had been fired" (Eng. "'Warning balls' - also known as 'stun grenades' were fired") is used.
In the course of the fifth anti-whaling campaign Operation Musashi 2008-2009, the Steve Irwin chased the Japanese whaling fleet over 5000 km. The Japanese killed 300 fewer whales than planned.
During the sixth anti-whaling campaign Operation Waltzing Matilda 2009-2010, the 800-ton Japanese harpooner Shonan Maru 2 collided with the 18-ton trimaran Ady Gil . Both sides blamed the incident. The Shonan Maru 2 suffered no significant damage, but the heavily damaged Ady Gil sank shortly afterwards. Thereupon their captain Pete Bethune secretly entered the Shonan Maru 2 in order to make a civil arrest of the Japanese captain Hiroyuki Komura and to present him a bill for 3 million dollars for the destruction of the Ady Gil . The Japanese side interpreted the secret entry of the ship as piracy and arrested Pete Bethune. The Shonan Maru 2 returned to Japan with him on board. The incident contributed significantly to the fact that the Japanese whaling fleet killed 528 fewer whales than planned this season. Pete Bethune was released early from a Japanese prison after 5 months. It should have helped him that he had previously distanced himself from Sea Shepherd and declared that he would not return to the Southern Ocean. After Bethune was released from prison, he sued Sea Shepherd, along with the shipowner Ady Gil, because his Admiral Paul Watson had ordered him to sink the Ady Gil . Watson replied that the trimaran could not be saved and that the decision to sink it had ultimately been made by Bethune. Pete Bethune can be seen on a film recording as he says: " Yes, I guess we're going to have to let it go " .
Sea Shepherd's seventh anti-whaling campaign, Operation No Compromise 2010-2011, used three ships for the first time. The campaign led Japan's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Michihiko Kano, to prematurely end 2011 whaling in Antarctica waters. The Minister named the attacks by Sea Shepherd as the reason, which also resulted in only 170 instead of the planned 850 whales being caught. According to Jun Yamashita , deputy director of the Fisheries Authority, the actions of the Sea Shepherds have caused the Japanese whaling fleet to remain below its quota in recent years:
- “ […] The NGO's actions have kept the fleet from reaching its quota the last few years. ”
In December 2011, the Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research sued Sea Shepherd in the United States District Court in Seattle , requesting an injunction requiring Sea Shepherd's ships to stay out of its fleet. The complaint was rejected in the first instance in February 2012. In contrast, the ICR appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th District Appeals a. On December 17, 2012, the court upheld the Japanese and ruled that Sea Shepherd must keep at least 500 yards (457 m) away from the ICR ships and not use any force against their ships and crew. The Court, inter alia, that Sea Shepherd's behavior after doing decided to international law the offense of piracy fulfilled. Paul Watson then resigned as Sea Shepherd President and was replaced by Bob Brown. Sea Shepherd's appeal to the Supreme Court was denied on February 14, 2013. The judgment thus became final. Despite the conditions and although Sea Shepherd's trimaran, the Brigitte Bardot, was damaged by a wave, the Japanese fleet was found during Operation Divine Wind 2011-2012. This then returned prematurely and shot 768 fewer whales than planned.
Operation Zero Tolerance 2012-2013 was the first anti-whaling campaign conducted by Sea Shepherd Australia rather than the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Sea Shepherd calls it both the biggest and most successful campaign. On the Sea Shepherd side, 4 ships and 120 crew members from 20 nations took part. The number of rescued whales is estimated at 932.
In 2014 Paul Watson declared the ruling of the International Court of Justice in The Hague of March 31, 2014 to be a decisive turning point. According to this, Japanese whaling in Antarctica was illegal under international law and must be stopped immediately. Australia had sued Japan. New Zealand had joined the proceedings as a joint plaintiff. Japan had declared in the run-up to the judgment that it wanted to recognize it. An appeal against this judgment is not possible. However, as of December 1, 2015, the Japanese whaling program was resumed. However, Japan lowered its self-imposed quota from 1000 to 333 whales.
In December 2018, Japan announced that it no longer wanted to return to Antarctica. This ended the era of anti-whaling campaigns for Sea Shepherd in Antarctica.
Sunk whaling ships
Sea Shepherd claims to have sunk ten whaling ships since 1979 and describes the whalers as modern day " pirates ". The whalers, however, accuse Sea Shepherd of " eco-terrorism ".
Some Ships Sunk According To Sea Shepherd:
- 1979 - The Sierra whaler rammed and sunk off Portugal
- 1980 - The whalers Isba I and Isba II sunk off Vigo , Spain
- 1980 - The whalers Susan and Theresa sunk off South Africa
- 1986 - the whalers Hvalur 6 and Hvalur 7 sunk in Iceland
- 1992 - the whaler Nybrænna sunk off Norway
- 1994 - the whaler Senet sunk off Norway
- 1998 - the whaler Morild sunk off Norway
Actions
Sea Shepherd is committed to a number of campaigns to protect the last of the vaquitas , as well as dolphins , whales , sea turtles , salmon and other fish. Furthermore, the organization regularly carries out beach clean ups and organizes garbage disposal, reef protection and water supply for the island state of Kiribati, which is threatened by climate change .
Protection of the last vaquitas
Operation Milagro started in February 2015. Since then there have been five follow-up campaigns (Operation Milagro 2 to 6). The aim of these campaigns is to save the approximately 30 remaining vaquitas from extinction. The vaquitas, also known as California harbor porpoises, are the smallest marine mammals in the world. They live off the east coast of Baja California , in Mexico. Vaquitas repeatedly end up as bycatch in nets that are laid out for the totoaba , a fish that is also threatened with extinction. Its swim bladder can fetch up to $ 50,000 on the Chinese black market.
The Mexican government has worked with Sea Shepherd from the start, providing escorts through the Mexican Navy and law enforcement officers to protect the crew and make arrests. To date, Sea Shepherd has removed over 1,000 illegal fishing gear. This corresponds to 174 km of fishing gear or 3400 animals saved alive. The background to the six campaigns, as well as to the Vaquitas in general, are dealt with in detail in the documentary Sea of Shadows produced by Terra Mater .
Operation Treasured Island
The eastern tropical Pacific is one of the richest habitats on this planet. Although it makes up less than a thousandth of the world's ocean surface, it produces more than 10% of the world's fish catch and is therefore particularly interesting for illegal fishing. Sea Shepherd's fleet patrols there, in collaboration with authorities from Mexico , Ecuador , Peru , and Costa Rica to monitor existing laws and agreements. The area to be monitored is around 2 million square kilometers. In order to be able to monitor such a large area, Sea Shepherd entered into a cooperation with the non-profit environmental observer Skytruth . This enables Sea Shepherd to observe suspicious activity from space and to target ships to the places where illegal fishing is suspected.
Protection of salmon
Operation Virus Hunter is a research mission whose stated goal is to close salmon farms , if possible worldwide. The sailing ship Martin Sheen acts as a research station and supports independent scientists in studying viruses , parasites and other pathogens that escape from the salmon farms. In addition, drones are used to document grievances in wild salmon farms. With the film recordings obtained in this way, u. a. It will be shown that MOWI , the largest farmed salmon company in the world, had hidden a mass extinction in which 2.6 million salmon were killed. As a result, licenses for several fish farms were suspended. It has also been shown that salmon farms spread diseases that endanger the wild salmon population and that wild salmon and other juvenile fish die in the nets of the salmon farms. Sea Shepherd works closely with First Nations because most of the farms have been built by wild salmon without their permission on their territory and along migration routes. These farms now not only threaten the wild salmon stocks, but with them also the economic survival of the indigenous population, which is dependent on ecotourism and local fishing.
Protection of sea turtles
Since 2014, Sea Shepherd regularly conducts campaigns in Costa Rica , Honduras , Florida , Antigua , Barbuda and Nicaragua through to sea turtles to protect. In Operation Jairo-Nicaragua, the latest campaign to protect sea turtles, volunteers patrolled Nicaragua's beaches to protect sea turtles and their eggs from poachers. For this purpose, the eggs were brought to a local hatchery and thus withdrawn from poachers' access. In addition, the volunteers carried out regular beach clean ups and organized activities to create a positive climate within the population. An operation Jairo Nicaragua 32 volunteers were involved. They found 44 nests and saved 3,906 eggs.
Commitment to the pollution of the seas
Sea Shepherd regularly carries out beach clean-ups. During these cleaning campaigns, all garbage found on the beaches is separated, documented, recycled if possible and otherwise disposed of. Sea Shepherd also supports scientists in their research on microplastics in the oceans. In order to sensitize the population to the effects of litter in the seas, information campaigns are carried out in countries such as Brazil and Guatemala . This always happens in cooperation with local nature conservation organizations.
Operation Clean Wave is a collaboration with the island nation of Kiribati to get the rubbish problem and coral bleaching under control there. To accomplish this, a waste management plan was installed so that the garbage is no longer burned or disposed of in nature, as was previously the case. To avoid this, Sea Shepherd sends a transport ship to Kiribati every 2 months. This takes the garbage collected there and brings it to Honduras for recycling . To avoid waste , 60 water treatment systems were installed in cooperation with Waves for Water . This means that more people have access to clean drinking water and waste from plastic bottles is reduced. As part of Operation Clean Wave , Sea Shepherd carried out an inventory of the coral reef surrounding the Fanning Islands . This showed that 99% of the corals have already died. However, coral fragments were also found on the sea floor. With them, as a base, the coral reef is to be rebuilt. Sea Shepherd is now working with the local population to set up so-called coral kindergartens and give the reef a new chance.
Operation Icefish
Between December 2014 and March 2016, Sea Shepherd carried out a campaign in the Southern Ocean against a group of six hake poachers. On December 17, 2014, Sea Shepherd announced that the Bob Barker had found the poaching ship Thunder and would chase it into port. On April 6, after a 110-day chase, the captain of the Thunder sank his ship in the waters of São Tomé and Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea itself. Meanwhile, the Sam Simon confiscated 72 kilometers of illegal nets. After being chased to Indonesia by the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin , the Indonesian Navy sank the last poaching ship in March 2016. Interpol officials and Australian Senator Peter Whish-Wilson appointed Sea Shepherd in the New to stop poaching activities York Times praised. In the film Chasing the Thunder and the television series Ocean Warriors will surgery Icefish documented.
successes
According to Jun Yamashita , deputy director of the Fisheries Authority , the actions of the Sea Shepherds have caused the Japanese whaling fleet to remain below its quota in recent years:
- “ […] The NGO's actions have kept the fleet from reaching its quota the last few years. ”
The Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Michihiko Kano declared whaling of 2011 in the waters of Antarctica ended. The Minister named the attacks by Sea Shepherd as the reason, which also resulted in only 170 instead of the planned 850 whales being caught. In total, the Japanese whaling fleet lagged 6,000 behind its self-imposed quota in the 10 years that Sea Shepherd disrupted it. Sea Shepherd concludes that they saved the lives of 6,000 whales.
During Operation Pacuare in 2014, 42 clutches and 4,737 sea turtle eggs were saved from poachers. 269 leatherback turtles , 1163 green sea turtles and 1546 hawksbill turtles were then able to reach the sea, guarded by Sea Shepherd.
During Operation Mamacocha , Sea Shepherd gathered information that led to the arrest of the Damanzaihao , the largest factory ship in the world. The Damanzaihao processed up to 547,000 tons of fish per year. She is alleged to have fished illegally and polluted the waters of Peru.
fleet
Sea Shepherd currently operates a fleet of eleven vessels: Ocean Warrior , Brigitte Bardot , Bob Barker , Steve Irwin , Sam Simon , John Paul DeJoria , Farley Mowat , Sharpie , Jairo Mora Sandoval , White Holly and Martin Sheen .
The first ships were the Sea Shepherd (1978-1979), Sea Shepherd II (1980-1992) acquired from the royalties for the film rights of the sinking of the Portuguese Sierra , the Cleveland Amory (until 1993), named after the animal rights activist of the same name , and the Whales Forever (1994-1996). For the latter, Deutsches Tierhilfswerk and its sister association, the European Animal Relief Organization, contributed half a million marks, and the ship was equipped with a mini submersible called the Mirage to destroy drift nets and to place sticky mines.
The Farley Mowat was bought in 1996 and with her 54 meters length and 659 GRT was the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. It is an ice class ship and was built for the high seas . It was originally used by Norwegian researchers until Sea Shepherd bought the ship in Scotland in August 1996 and named it after the Canadian writer Farley Mowat . In 2008 it was seized by the Canadian government and in 2014 the Farley Mowat was partially scrapped.
In 2006 the organization bought the trawler Westra. The ship was built in 1975 and previously served the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency. The ship was renamed Robert Hunter . In December 2007, the ship was renamed Steve Irwin in honor of the late documentary filmmaker Steve Irwin . The Steve Irwin was 58 meters long and suitable for the sea.
The Sirenian was a former US Coast Guard ship and was built in 1955. In 1979 the ship got more powerful engines and was therefore very fast. Sea Shepherd acquired it from the US Coast Guard in 1991. From 2000 to 2005, the ship was used as a patrol ship in the Galapagos National Park under a contract. In the same year Paul Watson signed a contract for the Sirenian to be permanently stationed there. In 2006 the ship was renamed and redesigned Yoshka . It was later donated to an environmental organization in the Galapagos Islands .
In 2007, two Sea Shepherd ships (were Farley Mowat and Robert Hunter ) from the ship register of Belize and the UK deleted. In the same year, the ships received the flag of the Kahnawake Mohawk Nation. Since November 2007, both ships have been sailing under the Dutch flag.
The speedboat Earthrace could be purchased through a donation . In October 2009 it was renamed Ady Gil after one of the donors . The Ady Gil sank on 8 January 2010 after a collision with a Japanese whaling ship, or could they scuttled have been.
In December 2009 the Sea Shepherds' fleet was expanded to include the Bob Barker . The ship was a gift from the American TV presenter and avowed animal rights activist Bob Barker . The long-time presenter of The price is right donated US $ 5 million for the purchase, it is a 1,200 GRT , 53 meter long, former harpoon ship that sailed under the Norwegian flag until 2004. It was registered in Togo during the 2009/2010 anti-whaling campaign . In May 2010 the Bob Barker also received the Dutch flag.
In November 2010 Sea Shepherd announced that the Ocean 7 Adventurer trimaran was expanding its fleet. He was in a solemn ceremony in Fremantle on the name Gojira (Japanese for Godzilla baptized). The Gojira is the first Sea Shepherd ship to sail under the Australian flag. After disputes with the naming rights holder Tōhō , the ship was given the name of the actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot in May 2011 , whose animal welfare foundation had contributed to the purchase of the trimaran. At the end of December 2011, the Brigitte Bardot was hit by a wave in rough seas during a campaign, which led to severe damage in the form of cracks in the hull. In the following week, after the port boom was broken off, part of the crew had to be evacuated by the Steve Irwin . The necessary repair work was carried out in the port of Fremantle and largely completed in March 2012, so that the Brigitte Bardot was available again for the subsequent campaigns.
On December 10, 2012, the ship Sam Simon was presented as part of the Operation Zero Tolerance campaign . The 56-meter-long ship was previously used as a research ship by the Japanese government under the name Seifu Maru .
In 2013 the fleet was expanded to include the Jairo Mora Sandoval . It has been used in Operation Sunu Gaal since January 2014 . In cooperation with the Senegalese Ministry of Fisheries and the Coast Guard, action is taken against illegal fishing off the coast of the West African state of Senegal .
On October 18, 2014, it was announced that Sea Shepherd's fleet would be expanded to include the Martin Sheen sailing ship . The 24-meter-long ketch is named after the American actor Martin Sheen and is intended to investigate the pollution of the world's oceans by plastic waste in the future. It serves the organization as a research ship.
In 2015, the two 34-meter-long former ships of the US Coast Guard Block Island and Pea Island were bought. They were renamed Farley Mowat and John Paul DeJoria . The Farley Mowat is the second Sea Shepherd ship to be named after the Canadian author.
For the Stop Illegal Fishing in the Southern Ocean project , Sea Shepherd received a total of 8.3 donations from the postcode lotteries in the Netherlands, Sweden and Great Britain at the Goed Geld Gala (Gutes Geld Gala) in Amsterdam on January 26, 2015 Million Euros. For the first time in its history, the organization had its own ship built for this money. The design comes from the Dutch shipbuilder Damen . On July 1, 2016, the new ship, the Ocean Warrior , was launched in the port of Antalya .
In June 2017, the company Dr. Bronner’s a ship that is supposed to protect the wildlife in the North and Baltic Seas - and especially the native porpoises . The ship is named Emanuel Bronner , the founder of the natural soap company.
In December 2017, Chris Sharp, founder of several biotechnology companies, donated a 34-meter-long Iceland-class ship, which was christened Sharpie . The ship is to be used primarily off the Mexican coast to prevent the vaquitas from becoming extinct .
Sea Shepherd also owns several smaller boats. Sea Shepherd first used a drone in December 2011 to locate the flagship of the Japanese whaling fleet on the high seas.

Structure and finances
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is based in the United States. In 2014, longtime activist and political scientist Ethan Wolf was appointed honorary president and animal rights activist Ann Prezyna was appointed secretary of the organization. Sea Shepherd is organized as a group of many active volunteers, a few full-time employees and a few passive sustaining members in the background.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a foundation under US law (Society) and thus, similar to foundations and non-profit associations in Germany, enjoys tax benefits. As a recognized non-profit organization , it is subject to special regulations under Section 501 (c) (3) of the US Income Tax Act. The organization does not spend any money on fundraising, although it is mainly financed by donations. Other sources of income are the sale of merchandise and the sale of film rights. While Sea Shepherd was able to book donations of around 1.6 million euros in 2008, it was 11.4 million US dollars in 2012 and 14.7 million US dollars in 2018. Since 2013, these figures refer exclusively to the USA. Because since Sea Shepherd Global was founded , the individual country groups no longer transfer their donations to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, but use them to finance campaigns that are coordinated by Sea Shepherd Global.
Compared to Greenpeace (197 million euros in 2008 and 226 million euros in 2012), Sea Shepherd is indeed a "dwarf" according to Wirtschaftswoche , but has been gaining increasing media attention and thus donations since the temporary arrest of Watson in 2012. In addition, the organization attracted prominent supporters such as US moderator Bob Barker and Esprit and North Face founder Doug Tompkins . The former bought a ship for the organization, and Tompkins paid all the fuel bills.
In 2010 the Sea Shepherd Deutschland eV association was founded in Germany. V. based in Bremen, represented by the then managing director Anne Kämmerling. In 2012 Sea Shepherd Austria was founded. The German headquarters in Bremen- Vegesack was opened on August 1st, 2015 . The association now has other local groups in Germany, whose members mainly advertise the campaigns of the parent organization. Since 2013, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has no longer coordinated finance, actions and communications, but rather Sea Shepherd Global.
Well-known Sea Shepherd supporters
Some of Sea Shepherd's best-known supporters include:
The scientists Roger Payne and Godfrey Merlen also support Sea Shepherd. On December 5, 2011, Sea Shepherd announced that actor Sean Connery , surfer Stephanie Gilmore and television producer Sam Simon had joined the organization's international advisory board.
In December 2013, the well-known freediver Herbert Nitsch joined the advisory board.
Actress Anne Menden is supporting Sea Shepherd in the Faroe Islands in Operation Sleppid Grindini , the sixth campaign to protect the pilot whales .
Media reception
After initial conflicts between Japanese whalers and the SSCS in 2011, the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key announced their mutual support in an attempt to finally end whaling in Antarctica.
The US broadcaster Animal Planet has been producing several seasons of the documentary-like TV series Whale Wars since 2009 . In the series, the organization's actions and campaigns are presented in a dramaturgical way. Whale Wars was parodied in the episode The Sin Whale of the television series South Park . The activists took note of the publicity.
In 2015, the organization's logo and that of the metalcore band Heaven Shall Burn were featured on the jerseys of the third division soccer club FC Carl Zeiss Jena . Heaven Shall Burn covered all of the sponsorship costs.
In 2016, the US broadcaster Animal Planet produced a documentary-like television series called "Ocean Warriors". The series shows how various organizations take action against eco-crime. Sea Shepherd is featured prominently on the series.
In 2018 the book Vaquita - Science, Politics and Crime in the Sea of Cortez , as well as the accompanying audio book, by Brooke Bessesen came out. In addition to vaquitas, it also deals with the actors who protect vaquitas and Sea Shepherd's efforts to save the last vaquitas from extinction are dealt with in detail.
criticism
In the fall of 1998 a boat with Sea Shepherds on board paced up and down in front of Makahs to protest their whaling. The activists were thereupon, in front of the camera, pelted with stones and verbally abused. Critics condemned the behavior of Sea Shepherd activists and the negative portrayal of the Makah in the media as racist . From Sea Shepherd's point of view, it would have been more racist to look the other way around the Makahs because of their ethnicity after fighting whaling from the Soviet Union, Norway, the Danish Faroe Islands, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Iceland and Japan. Sea Shepherd rejects blanket accusations of racism as "routinely" raised, "politically motivated defamation" and counters these with its "declaration of equality", which every volunteer must confirm in writing.
The collaboration with Brigitte Bardot and in particular the naming of a ship after her brought Sea Shepherd again sharp criticism in 2011, since Bardot is committed to the right-wing party Front National . The Sea Shepherd Germany e. V. distanced itself "unequivocally" in a message from any racist and right-wing populist activities of Brigitte Bardot, but the ship kept her name, " as a tribute to Brigitte Bardot's commitment to animal welfare " and the animal welfare foundation she set up " Fondation Brigitte Bardot ”, which largely financed the purchase of the trimaran.
The actions are considered risky for fellow campaigners and opponents of Sea Shepherd. Sea Shepherd conducts regular safety drills to minimize the risk. In addition, a doctor is always present on all major campaigns. In over 40 years, the organization has not had any injured or lost crew members. However, there were some minor injuries. Paul Watson stated in an interview that Sea Shepherd crew members were injured by Japanese whale hunters. He himself said he was shot during an operation.
Greenpeace warns that radical actions by Sea Shepherd could discredit all whaling protests (especially in whaling nations like Japan). Japan in particular has a certain national pride in international negotiations and does not want to be patronized. Educating the population could thus generate domestic political pressure that was more sustainable than hindering the whalers. According to Sea Shepherd activists, however, many Japanese (and also Europeans, including in Norway and Greenland) are completely unaware of the hunting of marine mammals in their area. In this respect, the creation of media attention serves to publicize the events. In Japan in particular, whaling is a losing business for which the Japanese taxpayer has to pay.
