Ignite (English; in German about ignite / catch fire ) is a melodic hardcore band from Orange County, California .
history
Brett Rasmussen and Joe D. Foster formed a band in 1992, which Joe Nelson and Gavin Oglesby joined in 1993. Gavin eventually brought in Casey Jones as a drummer . The first band name was Fuse, other names were Angerslave and Shade. After the first demo tape with the songs Ash Return , Distance , Slow , Should Have Known and Far Away hired Joe Nelson temporarily as roadie for Quicksand on. Lost & Found Records offered Ignite to release an LP in Europe and promised them a tour with Sick of It All and Slapshot in the summer of 1994. Ignite persuaded Foster to sing while recording the album Scarred for Life , but they missed for the tour a singer. After several months of searching, they found what they were looking for in the Hungarian-born Zoltán "Zoli" Téglás .
After the big European tour with Slapshot, Ignite recorded the EP In my Time in early 1995 with the line-up Téglás / Rasmussen / Foster / Jones. This started the problems with Lost & Found, since Ignite left the master tapes in Germany. Ignite now had a new label with Conversion Records in America, which was also represented in Europe with its headquarters in Berlin . When asked whether Lost & Found would publish the master tapes for publication in the United States, the Wedemärker label reacted angrily and threatened to boycott conversion, which would have meant the end of it in Europe. So Ignite gave the rights to the LP Family to Lost & Found.
In America the album Call on My Brothers was released , which consisted of the material from the albums In My Time and Family available in Europe plus bonus tracks . Ignite then switched to the hardcore label Revelation and released the EP Past our Means in the summer of 1996 . This was followed by a tour of Japan and a festival tour in Europe with Millencolin and Madball . Ignite was named the third best live band of 1996 by VISIONS magazine . In April 1997, during the "Wonderland Festival Tour", drummer Casey Jones unexpectedly left the band. With Scott Golley they found a replacement and toured Europe in the summer of 1997. Then Craig Anderson came to the band as a drummer.
The band members started side projects and a new label was looked for. Founding member Joe D. Foster got out and was replaced by Brian Balchack. After several tours, Ignite began recording A Place Called Home , which was released in 2000 on TVT Records in America. Since TVT is not represented in Europe, the album was released there by GUN / Supersonic. During the subsequent tours they changed guitarists and finally found their way back to Brian Balchack. A Place Called Home turned out to be a success and made the band well known; Among other things, the band was allowed to play on the Persistence Tour in 2003 . In spring 2006 a live DVD and the album Our Darkest Days were released . On the following tour Ignite were supported by guitarists Nik Hill and Kevin Kilkenny, which meant another lineup change.
Parallel to Ignite, Zoltán "Zoli" Téglás and the other band members realized the Zoli Band (later California United ) project. Under these names they recorded songs that did not fit the Ignite style and are more rock than hardcore. Zoli Band and California United quickly established their own following. The side projects were discontinued due to lack of time. There is currently a studio album by Zoli Band as well as a live album and a three-song demo by California United.
Since 2008 there have been discussions about the political views of the singer Téglás. Guilt was a guest contribution to a song by the Hungarian band Hungarica , which are known in their homeland for an extremely nationalist and anti-Semitic attitude. In an interview during the Zoli Band tour in 2010, Téglás commented and explained how this song came about and expressly distanced himself from any nationalist sentiments.
In January 2016 the fifth studio album A War Against You was released , with which the band reached their first chart position with number twelve in Germany .
In November 2019, singer Téglás announced his departure from the band. However, he announced that he would still take part in the California tour that had already been booked in early 2020.
The band members are avowed supporters of the marine conservation organization " Sea Shepherd ". They include the organization's remittance slip in their booklets, which can be used to support the organization directly.
style
The style of the band is based on the typical melodic so-called West Coast Hardcore (see also Melodic Hardcore ). The band is one of the most important exponents of this style today. Allmusic describes the music as "Melodic Hardcore with social and political awareness".
