Martin Sheen , real name Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez (born August 3, 1940 in Dayton , Ohio ), is an American film actor . His breakthrough came in 1979 with the lead role in Apocalypse Now . Since then he has been a sought-after actor in television and cinema productions.

Sheen is the son of a Galician father and an Irish mother. He is married to Janet Sheen (real name: Janet Estevez, nee Templeton) and the father of Emilio Estevez (* 1962), Ramón Estevez (* 1963), Charlie Sheen (* 1965, real name Carlos Estévez) and Renée Estevez (* 1967) as well the older brother of Joe Estevez (* 1946), also an actor. As he struggled with racist prejudice at the beginning of his career, he took the name "Martin Sheen" while his brother kept his maiden name. The avowed Catholic chose his stage name in honor of the American Archbishop Fulton John Sheen . He was Bishop of Rochester and one of the first television preachers in the United States.

Initially, Sheen was active on the theater stage and in supporting film roles. 1979 saw his international breakthrough with Apocalypse Now . He got the role because the portrayal of the original lead actor Harvey Keitel still unsatisfied director Francis Ford Coppola after two weeks of shooting.

Sheen is politically active and protested a. a. in the 1980s against the military plans and nuclear facilities under the Ronald Reagan administration and against the 2003 Iraq war . His public criticism of US President George W. Bush attracted attention not least because Sheen in the role of President Josiah Bartlet in the successful TV series The West Wing - In the Center of Power at the same time enjoyed great popularity. He is also actively involved in environmental protection and supports the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd Conservation Society . On October 18, 2014 it was announced that Sea Shepherd's fleet had been expanded to include a sailing ship ( ketch ) bearing the name Martin Sheen . In 2008 he was awarded the Laetare Medal for his humanitarian commitment . Sheen also stands up for the German citizen Jens Soering , arrested in 1990 for double murder , of whose innocence he is convinced.

In Germany, Sheen is mostly dubbed by Christian Brückner .

particularities

Sheen's left arm was broken by forceps during delivery . Therefore, he cannot fully stretch it, and it is 7.5 cm shorter than the right one. This is also the reason for his characteristic way of putting on the jacket, which is often seen in The West Wing .

Sheen was recognized for his role in the television series The West Wing in the 2000 Satellite Awards . The following year he received a Golden Globe Award for the same role .

During his career he was nominated for an Emmy several times , in 1994 he won this award for an appearance on the television series Murphy Brown . Martin Sheen was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

In 2010 he was selected for the Nuclear-Free Future Award in the Lifetime Achievement category. In 2012 Sheen received the Thomas Merton Award .
