California Kid (Original title: The California Kid ) is an American feature film directed by Richard T. Heffron from 1974 . The leading roles are played by Martin Sheen , Vic Morrow , Nick Nolte , Michelle Phillips and Gary Morgan .

In 1958, in Clarksburg , California , Sheriff Roy Childress relentlessly hunts down tempo sinners after his wife and children are killed in a car accident. Two sailors who hurry to return to their base in time are driven to their deaths in a chase. Shortly thereafter, the brother of one of the killed sailors in the village, Michael McCord, who drives a conspicuous hot rod and wants to solve the mysterious deaths.

Among other things, he compares the bumpers of the accident cars with the bumper of the police car. When McCord finally finds out that Childress drove the sailors to their death in a chase, he challenges the sheriff to a duel with his hot rod, in which the sheriff has a fatal accident.

The cars shown in the film are a 1951 Ford Custom as the car that crashed the sailors, a 1934 Ford as Hot Rod McCords, a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere as a police car, and a Checker Marathon as a taxi.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged that it was a "[s] solidly staged television thriller", "which relies on precise tension dramaturgy and the nostalgic appeal of old limousines".
