Laetare Medal

The Laetare Medal is the oldest (since 1883) and most prestigious award given annually by the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, to American Catholics whose excellence in the arts and sciences exemplify the ideals of the Church and contribute to the heritage of the Afford humanity.

Some of the most famous award winners are Jeremiah Denis Matthias Ford (1937), William Rosecrans , John McCormack , Dorothy Day , Frederick D. Rossini , Walker Percy , Cardinal Joseph Bernardin , Eunice Shriver , Sister Helen Prejean (1996), Dave Brubeck (2006), Martin Sheen (2008), Joe Biden (2016).
