Eunice Shriver (born July 10, 1921 in Brookline , Massachusetts , † August 11, 2009 on Cape Cod , Massachusetts; born Eunice Mary Kennedy ) was a sister of John F. , Robert F. and Edward Kennedy and an activist for people with disabilities .

Life

Eunice Kennedy was born the fifth child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy . She attended schools in England and studied at Manhattanville College and Stanford University , which she graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1943 .

Her older sister Rosemary Kennedy 's disability led her to found the world's largest event for disabled sports, the Special Olympics , in 1968 . Shriver has received numerous awards for her commitment at home and abroad, including her portrait on a US coin, the Special Olympics Silver Dollar.

She was also involved in the Community of Caring program aimed at preventing teenage pregnancies and has been instrumental in establishing the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University and a similar institute at Harvard University .

She was married to Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. since May 23, 1953 . This marriage has five children:

Although a member of the Democratic Kennedy family , she supported her Republican son-in-law Arnold Schwarzenegger in his election as governor of California. After her death and that of the sisters Rosemary and Patricia 2006 as well as that of her brother Edward Kennedy, who died on August 25, 2009, the youngest of the sisters Jean Ann († June 17, 2020 in New York City ) was the last living member of the second generation of the Kennedy family.
