The film is based on a true story and tells of the preacher Carlton Pearson , a well-known evangelical pastor who caused quite a stir in the early 21st century when he declared there was no hell. Person lost everything and had to rebuild his church from scratch and find his faith again.

It was directed by Joshua Marston and the screenplay was written by Marcus Hinchey .

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Pastor Carlton Pearson. After Robert Redford was originally supposed to take on the role of the Protestant pastor Oral Roberts , a US TV preacher of the Methodist Church, this role was ultimately filled with Martin Sheen . Danny Glover played Quincy Pearson and Condola Rashād played Gina Pearson. Joni Bovill took on the role of Yvette Flunder , a singer and pastor of the City of Refuge United Church of Christ in Oakland and Bishop of the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries. Jason Segel can be seen in the role of Henry and Keith Stanfield in the role of Reggie.

The German dubbing was commissioned by VSI Synchron GmbH, Berlin, based on a dialogue book and directed by Marianne Groß . Carlton Pearson is spoken in the German version by Torben Liebrecht , Henry by Dennis Schmidt-Foss and Reggie by Konrad Bösherz .

The soundtrack was composed by Tamar-kali .

Filming took place in and around Atlanta and began in January 2017.

The film premiered on January 21, 2018 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . A first trailer was presented in March 2018. On April 13, 2018, the film was accepted on Netflix 's offer in the USA .
