The 34th Sundance Film Festival took place January 18-28, 2018 in Park City , Utah . It opened with a screening of the film Loveling by Gustavo Pizzi . A total of 110 films from 29 countries were shown at the eleven-day festival, including the German-Brazilian co-production The Cleaners by Moritz Riesewieck and Hans Block in the World Cinema Documentary Competition . Also, the German-Syrian-Lebanese documentary competed Of Fathers and Sons of the Syrian-born and Berlin-based director Talal Derki in this division, which already in 2014 for his documentary Return to Homs was honored at the Sundance Film Festival. The films that premiered there also include a number of directorial debuts. The historical drama The Happy Prince by Rupert Everett , partly filmed in Germany , was presented, Paul Dano presented the film drama Wildlife in the US Dramatic Competition and Idris Elba presented the crime film Yardie in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition . In addition, the documentary film Believer by Don Argott celebrated its world premiere as part of the festival, to which Dan Reynolds , the singer of the US band Imagine Dragons , is dedicated and tells of his life as a Mormon. Hearts Beat Loud was shown as the graduation film.

Competition films and program of the official sections

At the Sundance Film Festival, prizes are awarded in various sections and categories. Documentaries and feature films enter the competition separately, as do US and foreign productions. This creates the four main competitions US Dramatic Competition, US Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition and the World Cinema Documentary Competition. In addition, there are a few other categories out of competition. A large number of the films featured were announced on November 29, 2017.
