Panos Cosmatos (* 1974 in Rome , Italy ) is a Canadian director , screenwriter and producer .

biography

Cosmatos was born in Rome in 1974 as the son of the Greek-Italian director George P. Cosmatos (1941–2005) and the Swedish sculptor Birgitta Ljungberg-Cosmatos (1940–1997). He grew up in Sweden , Mexico and Canada.

Cosmatos made his first short films and music videos in Canada before making his feature film debut in 2010, the self-written and self-produced film Beyond the Black Rainbow , a tribute to the science fiction and horror films of the 1970s and early 1980s, the Cosmatos from Redemption of the Feature Film Tombstone (1993) financed by his father and for which he received the 2012 Toronto Film Critics Association Award for best feature film debut. In 2013 he produced the documentary Rewind this! on the influence of the VHS format on the film industry and home video market in the 1980s. In 2017 Cosmatos shot his second feature film, the action thriller Mandy , in which Nicolas Cage took on the lead role, produced by Elijah Wood , his production company SpectreVision (including A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night ) and XYZ Films (including Tusk and The Raid 2 ) and whose film music was composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson . The shooting took place in Belgium in summer 2017 . Cosmatos describes his concept for Mandy as: “a bit more primitive than [Beyond the Black Rainbow] , who was very distant. While [Beyond the Black Rainbow] was mainly about [self- and other-] domination, suppression and regret, [Mandy] is much more about aggression and spontaneous emotions. "" When [Beyond the Black Rainbow] a Pink Floyd Album, then [Mandy] will be more of a Slayer album. "" [Beyond the Black Rainbow] was like my album with experimental electronic music, and [Mandy] will be more of my somewhat brisk Black Sabbath album. "

Mandy had its US premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2018 in the Midnight category , while its European premiere took place on May 12, 2018 at the Cannes Film Festival in the series Quinzaine des réalisateurs ("Two Weeks of Directors"). In contrast to the critically polarizing cult film Beyond the Black Rainbow , Mandy received almost unanimous praise and enthusiasm from the critics after the premieres of Sundance and Cannes, so that after the Cannes premiere, Mandy's score on Rotten Tomatoes was 97% and on Metacritic at 82 % stands. Immediately after the premiere in Cannes, the performance and publication rights of Mandy were sold in twenty countries, with the film to be published in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by Koch Media .
