Jóhann Jóhannsson
Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson (born September 19, 1969 in Reykjavík , Iceland ; † February 9, 2018 in Berlin , Germany ) was an Icelandic composer and filmmaker .
Life
As a child, Jóhann learned to play the piano and the trombone . Already during his school days he played for several bands and dealt with both composed and improvised music at an early age.
In the 1990s he came to the Icelandic theater, where he composed the music for performances. His first album Englabörn , released in 2002, is based on his theater compositions . Jóhann made his debut as a film composer in 2000 with the sports comedy Íslenski draumurinn ( The Icelandic Dream ) directed by Róbert I. Douglas . He achieved international fame in 2013 with his music for the thriller Prisoners . In 2015 he won the Golden Globe in the category Best Film Music for The Discovery of Infinity . With End of Summer he made his debut as a filmmaker in the Super 8 format in 2016 .
On February 9, 2018, Jóhann was found dead in his Berlin apartment at the age of 48. The cause of death was an overdose of cocaine in connection with medication he had to take due to illness. He left a daughter, his parents and sisters.
