Last and First Men is a science fiction film by Jóhann Jóhannsson , which premiered in February 2020 at the Berlin Film Festival .

The film is based on the science fiction novel Last and First Men by the English writer Olaf Stapledon from 1930. In 1983 Heyne's novel was published in a German translation under the title The Last and the First People .

The director was the Icelandic composer and filmmaker Jóhann Jóhannsson , who died in February 2018 and who, together with José Enrique Mación, also adapted Stapledon's novel and composed the film music with Yair Elazar Glotman . The soundtrack album is due to be downloaded from Deutsche Grammophon on February 28, 2020 , in a CD / Blu-ray combo version on March 27, 2020 and in a vinyl / Blu-ray box set on April 10, 2020 to be published.

The first screening of the film took place on February 25, 2020 as part of the Berlin Film Festival .

The film has so far won over all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 8.3 out of a possible 10 points.
