Talal Derki

Talal Derki (born July 24, 1977 in Damascus ) is a Syrian film director , cameraman and screenwriter who lives in Berlin. Derkis Of Fathers and Sons in 2017, as part of the Academy Awards 2019 nominated for Best Documentary and the award of the Film Prize 2019 German as best documentary award.

Life

Talal Derki was born in Damascus in 1977 , studied film directing at the Stavrako High Institute of Cinematographic Art and Television in Athens, graduating there in 2003.

His documentary Of Fathers and Sons premiered on November 15, 2017 at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and was screened from January 19, 2018 at the Sundance Film Festival , where it was awarded the World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize. Derki dedicated this award to his new adopted home Berlin at the local award ceremony. In January 2019, it was nominated for best documentary at the Academy Awards .

Derki has lived in Berlin since 2014. In 2019 he received an invitation to membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscar .
