action
Marlo, mother of two, is pregnant and has an unplanned third child. Jonah, their son, has a developmental disorder that doctors couldn't diagnose. She uses the Wilbarger Protocol to brush his skin to reduce its sensitivity. When Marlo and her husband Drew visit their wealthy brother Craig's home for dinner, he offers to pay a night mother as a baby shower gift, but Marlo refuses. Marlo gives birth to a daughter, whom she names Mia, and is quickly overwhelmed and exhausted. After Jonah's headmaster recommends sending him to another school, Marlo breaks down and she pulls up the contact information for the night maid.
That night, Tully, the night mother, visits Marlo. Despite their initial awkwardness, Marlo and Tully develop a close friendship over several nights. Tully turns out to be an extraordinary nanny who cleans the house and bakes cupcakes for Jonah's class. When Marlo mentions that Drew had a fetish for women in the 1950s, Tully dons a uniform that Marlo previously bought and they have a threesome with Drew. One night, Tully comes to work, visibly desperate, and says that she had an argument with her roommate because her roommate is angry that Tully brought too many connections home. Tully impulsively suggests they go into town for a drink, which Marlo reluctantly agrees to, and the two drive to Marlo's Old Quarter in Bushwick, Brooklyn. While in a bar, Tully suddenly tells Marlo that she can no longer work for her, explaining that she was only there to "fill a gap" and that she feels she is no longer needed. On the drive home, Marlo falls asleep behind the wheel and turns the car into a river.
Marlo finds himself trapped underwater and imagines Tully as a mermaid who comes to save her. She wakes up in a hospital with Drew. A staff psychiatrist approaches Drew and informs him that Marlo was suffering from extreme sleep deprivation and exhaustion. When the doctor asks about her nanny, Drew tells her he doesn't know much about her. A hospital employee asks Drew for Marlo's maiden name and he says: "Tully". Tully doesn't exist; Marlo imagined her from her earlier age of 26 to deal with stress. Marlo is visited one last time by Tully in her hospital room, where they decide they have to stop seeing each other and break up amicably.
Marlo returns home, where Jonah tells her that she no longer has to brush his skin. She goes into the kitchen to listen to music and prepare the children's lunch for the next day. Drew comes in and shares the music with her as he helps her.
