action

Mavis Gary is in her mid-thirties, lives in Minneapolis and works as an author of books for young people, the series of which the publisher will soon discontinue, however. She is recently divorced and is unsure what to do with her life. When she receives an email from her ex-boyfriend Buddy Slade, in which she learns about the birth of his daughter, she falls into a life crisis. She decides to return to the small town of Mercury, Minnesota , where she grew up and which she turned her back on after finishing school.

She drives back in the car while listening to an old mixtape that Buddy gave her as a token of his love. Instead of staying with her parents, she rents a hotel and arranges a meeting for the next day with Buddy, whom she wants to recapture. In the evening, Mavis goes to a bar for a drink, where she meets Matt Freehauf, who had his locker next to hers in high school. He was beaten up at school last year for being gay, still has to walk on a crutch and has an injured penis. Mavis confesses her intentions, which Matt tries to dissuade her.

The next evening, Mavis is heavily made up and wearing a low-cut dress when she meets her ex-boyfriend. The two remember their time together, and Buddy Slade invites them to his home and a concert by his wife's band. Then Mavis goes to Matt Freehauf and drinks with this homemade bourbon . Together they drive to Buddy's house, and Mavis tells Matt that she is convinced that Buddy is unhappy in his marriage and as a father, and that she has a good chance of winning him over.

The next evening she sees the performance of the band Nipple Confusion and then drives Buddy home because his wife Beth wants to celebrate with the other mothers from the band. Mavis kisses Buddy in front of the house, but the babysitter disturbs them. Mavis interprets this kiss as a sign that she is on the right track. On the street she meets her mother, who takes her home. In her old room, she puts on a sports jacket from Buddy's school days and then meets with Matt in the forest behind the school. There she accuses him of not growing up, while he holds this against her.

At the insistence of his wife, who feels sorry for Mavis, Buddy invites Mavis to his daughter's naming party. There Mavis tries to convince him to choose her, but Buddy refuses. While he is preparing the drums in the garage that he wants to give his wife as a gift, Mavis confesses to the assembled company that they wanted to recapture Buddy and that she was pregnant by him at the age of 20, but lost the child after three months. At that moment Buddy opens the garage door and unsuspectingly presents the drums to his wife. Mavis leaves the celebration.

She drives to Matt Freehauf and has sex with him. The next morning she talks to his sister, who convinces Mavis that she belongs in the big city and that she leads an enviable life. Then Mavis drives back to Minneapolis.

Reviews

Young Adult received mostly positive reviews. AO Scott reviewed the film for the New York Times and came to the conclusion that the film hides “its brilliant, competent and breathtakingly cynical core behind the superficial dullness of professional comedy.” (“'Young Adult' shrouds its brilliant, brave and breathtakingly cynical heart in the superficial blandness of commercial comedy. ”) He praised the feeling for the identity of the generation that the film is trying to portray. Young adults may play with the expectations of a romantic comedy, "but at the same time the well-known norms of modern film comedy are confused and overturned in a way that is confusing, amusing, terrifying and ultimately surprising." ("[B] ut at the same time ." , the established codes of modern movie comedy are scrambled and subverted in ways that are puzzling, amusing, horrifying and ultimately astonishing. ") Scott concluded that the film generated sympathy for Mavis, and not by justifying her actions but by treating her honestly.

Roger Ebert , who judged the film for the Chicago Sun-Times , saw Patton Oswalt in particular as a reason for the film's success, as his character Matt, with his humanity and honesty towards Mavis, played an important role for the audience. He concludes, “When I left the Young Adult screening, my mind was mixed up. [...] Due to the figure of Mavis, "Young Adult" is not easy to process. As I went through this, I realized what an intrepid character study the film is. The fact that he's sometimes funny doesn't hurt. " (" After I left the screening of "Young Adult," my thoughts were mixed. [...] The character of Mavis makes "Young Adult" tricky to process. As I absorbed it, I realized what a fearless character study it is. That sometimes it's funny doesn't hurt. ") The praise for Oswalt's performance was also shared by Peter Travers from Rolling Stone .
