Mary Beth Hurt (born September 26, 1948 in Marshalltown , Iowa , civil Mary Supinger ) is an American actress .

Life

Hurt graduated from the University of Iowa and the Tisch School of the Arts . In 1971 she married the actor William Hurt , and took his name on. In 1974, Hurt made her Broadway debut . In her theater career she was nominated three times for the Tony . Hurt received an obie for the role of Meg in Crimes of the Heart .

In 1978 Mary Beth Hurt made her film debut in Woody Allen's drama Inner Life . For this role, she received a nomination for Best Young Actress at the 1979 BAFTA Awards . She celebrated other great successes with Head Over Head (1979), Garp and How He Saw the World (1982) and Martin Scorsese's Time of Innocence (1993). In 2007, The Dead Girl received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the Independent Spirit Awards .

After divorcing William Hurt in 1981, Mary Beth Hurt married director and screenwriter Paul Schrader in 1983 .
