Mein Freund der Zombie (OT: My Boyfriend′s Back ) is an American horror comedy directed by Bob Balaban from 1993.

Johnny has been in love with his classmate Missy since he started school . However, he is too shy to speak to her. Years later, Johnny finally wants to look for his chance. But when he wants to invite Missy to the prom , Buck gets ahead of him. Johnny then comes up with a daring plan. His friend Eddie is said to have faked a robbery on the shop where Missy works. Johnny would save her as a shining hero; from this he promises to finally win her love. While he is standing at the cash register and waiting for Eddie, a real robber raids the store, killing Johnny. As he dies, he makes Missy promise to go to prom with him.
Johnny comes to life as a zombie after his funeral . He returns to his parents, who are overjoyed to have their son back. As a zombie, he needs human flesh to survive, otherwise he will decompose. Looking for help, he lets Dr. Investigate Bronson. He realizes that Johnny's skin could hold the key to eternal life. Johnny later becomes involved in a fight with Big Chuck, in which he dies. Faced with Big Chuck's death, an angry mob gathers to lynch Johnny . To help their son, his parents kidnap a child; his mother even becomes a murderer.
As a zombie, Johnny manages to speak to Missy for the first time and go out with her. Missy's father, the city's sheriff , however, gives him an ultimatum to leave the city. Dr. Bronson helps Johnny escape; however, it turns out that he is only interested in Johnny's skin. Although Johnny manages to escape, he is caught by the mob in the cemetery. He manages to convince the angry people that his only wish is to go to prom with Missy. This wish is granted to him and then he dies again.
Johnny finds himself in front of a heavenly court of law where he is given a second life. He returns to the earth of the past, where this time he survived the robbery. In the end, Johnny and Missy become a couple.

Actors Matthew Fox and Matthew McConaughey made their feature film debuts in this film. The future Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman can be seen in a supporting role. A scene with Renée Zellweger , who was completely unknown at the time, was also recorded, but it was not used. With just over $ 3 million from US theatrical release, the film was a commercial failure for Touchstone Pictures . For lead actor Andrew Lowery , who was previously seen mainly in television productions, it should remain the only leading role.
