Paul Dooley , actually Paul Brown (born February 22, 1928 in Parkersburg , West Virginia ) is an American actor .

Life

After retiring from the United States Navy, Paul Dooley studied theater and acting at West Virginia University in Morgantown , West Virginia . He also worked as a cartoonist for a local newspaper in Parkersburg. In the early 1950s Dooley made his first experiences as a stage actor as a member of the Second City Theater Group in New York .

In 1965, Dooley was discovered for the Broadway production A Strange Couple by Neil Simon . As the successor to Art Carney , he became known in the role of Felix , the counterpart to Walter Matthaus Oscar . In 1971 and 1972 he wrote scripts for the television program The Electric Company .

Dooley became known to an international audience in 1978 through the comedy A Wedding by Robert Altman . In 1979, he played a major supporting role alongside Dennis Quaid in the award-winning film Four Crazy Types - We All Can Make Us, Nobody Can Make Us, and for this he received an NBR Award in the same year . He starred in the comedy I Need an Heir in 1981, alongside Burt Reynolds and Beverly D'Angelo . As a supporting character he worked in the series Alf .

In 1999 Dooley played in the comedy The Bride Who Doesn't Dare the father of Maggie Carpenter ( Julia Roberts ), the alcoholic Walter Carpenter . He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1994 and 2000 for his guest roles in the television series Dream On and Practice - The Lawyers . Dooley was also featured in several episodes of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine television series . Since 2005 he has played alongside Bob Balaban in the series Hopeless Pictures .

Dooley married Donna Lee Wasser in 1958, with whom he has three children. After the divorce, he married television producer Winnie Holzman in 1984 , with whom he has a child.
