Kind Carney

Arthur William Matthew Carney (born November 4, 1918 in Mount Vernon , New York , † November 9, 2003 in Chester , Connecticut ) was an American film comedian and actor .

Act

Carney was the brother of actor and director Fred Carney and worked in the film business himself for over 50 years. He became known through the very popular TV sitcom The Honeymooners , in which he played the sewer worker Ed Norton . In the 1960s he played Felix Ungar 966 times on Broadway alongside Walter Matthau in the Neil Simon comedy A Strange Couple . In the 1968 film adaptation of the same name, Jack Lemmon took on Carney's role.

Carney preferred rather quiet roles, such as in 1979 in the tragic comedy Die Pensionner-Gang by Martin Brest , in which he robbed a bank with George Burns and Lee Strasberg . He also starred in a number of crime novels and appeared in the Stephen King film The Firebug in 1984 . In 1985 he starred with the Muppets in the movie The Muppets Conquer Manhattan . He had his last role in 1993 in the action film Last Action Hero with Arnold Schwarzenegger .

Carney won a total of seven Emmy Awards for various roles . Carney received an Oscar in 1974 for Best Actor for his leading role in the comedy film Harry and Tonto . In 2003, shortly before his death, he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame .
