Harry and Tonto (Original title: Harry and Tonto ) is an American comedy film directed by Paul Mazursky from 1974.
action
Retired New York teacher Harry Coombes has to move out of his apartment because his block is about to be demolished. At first he is staying with his son Burt. When Harry's friend Jacob dies, Harry makes his way to Las Vegas with his possessions and his cat Tonto to see his other son Eddie. Because of Tonto, Harry takes a bus instead of flying, but the bus ride is not the right thing for the cat either. So Harry buys a used car and goes on the long journey to Nevada. There he gets to know different people on his journey and finally finds new courage to live.
background
James Cagney was initially intended for the title role .
Pieces of fresh liver were placed around Carney to move the cats representing Tonto in front of the camera.
Reviews
The film service saw Mazursky's directorial work as “a very humorous, subtle comedy with melancholy undertones”. Harry and Tonto are "characterized by fine wit and the excellent play of the main actor". Cinema describes the film as a “cheerful, contemplative road movie”, which is a convincing “plea for more humanity” and is a “[m] elancholic encourager”.
In the New York Times , Nora Sayre said : "The narrative of this sympathetic film fluctuates on the edge of sentimentality, [...] staged far too slowly, which reduces the comic moments and the social commentary."
