The Ellison Group has acquired four small breweries , all of which are in financial difficulty. The young manager Frank Macklin is supposed to renovate one of the ailing breweries - in his old hometown of all places. He first clashes with his old friends, who now have to get used to the new line and then becomes so successful that the brewery is about to be sold again to a new owner.

The film was a commercial success in grossing over $ 17 million only in the US at a production cost of $ 4 million.

The popular country song Take This Job and Shove It , which was number 1 hit in the US in early 1978 , is the namesake of the original title. Songwriter David Allan Coe and singer Johnny Paycheck can be seen in supporting roles in the film.
