Royal Dano
Royal Edward Dano Sr. (born November 16, 1922 in New York City , † May 15, 1994 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .
Life
Royal Edward Dano was the son of Josephine, nee O'Connor and an Irish immigrant, and Caleb Edward Dano, a newspaper printer. He later studied at New York University and first worked as an actor during his service in World War II. As a stage actor he was then seen on Broadway . He made his screen debut in the 1950 published and directed by Joseph Pevney crime film Secret Policeman Christine Miller at the side of Alexis Smith and Gerald Mohr .
In the decades that followed, the actor often played strange or striking secondary characters, not least because of his gaunt figure and deep voice. In the 1950s, Dano appeared particularly frequently in westerns, often in distinctive villain roles such as in Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar - When Women Hate (1955) with Joan Crawford or Anthony Mann's The Man from the West (1958) with Gary Cooper . Directed by Alfred Hitchcock , he played a bad-tempered sheriff, paid for after arrests, in his black comedy Always Trouble with Harry . Dano was occasionally seen in more personable roles, for example as the prophetic Elijah in John Huston's classic literary film adaptation Moby Dick (1956) alongside Gregory Peck and as Simon Petrus in the Bibelfim King of Kings (1961). Dano later took on supporting roles in Clint Eastwood's western The Texaner (1975) and was in the science fiction films Space Invaders (1988) and Martians - An Extra Terrestrial Seldom Comes Alone (1990) each as a curious farmer with aliens comes into contact.
Dano has played numerous guest roles on television since the late 1940s. He was especially featured on western series such as Bonanza , West of Santa Fe , The People at Shiloh Ranch, and The Smoking Guns . His last television role was Judge Clinton Sternwood in David Lynch's mystery series Twin Peaks in 1990 . In total, Dano has appeared in over 190 film and television productions over the course of his life, most recently in 1993 in the horror film Stephen Kings Stark , directed by George A. Romero .
Royal Dano died of a heart attack after a car accident in May 1994 at the age of 71 . He had two sons with his wife Peggy, and the actor Hutch Dano is his grandson.
