David Allan Coe
David Allan Coe (* 6. September 1939 in Akron , Ohio ) is an American Outlaw - Country musician .
The beginnings
Coe spent most of his youth in prison . In contrast to other country and rock musicians, Coe's image as an outlaw is not just a show. His musical role model was primarily Hank Williams . In 1968 his first album "Penitentiary Blues" was released. In the same year he was on tour with Grand Funk Railroad . His concerts were considered wild and unpredictable. He did not appear on stage "normally" on foot, but on a motorcycle. He wore a rhinestone costume typical of the country and a mask. At the time he was also called the Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy .
Songwriter
Coe had his great success not so much as a singer, but as a songwriter . Here he rather showed his soulful side. He wrote songs for Tanya Tucker , Billie Jo Spears , George Jones and many more. One of his greatest hits was Take This Job and Shove It for Johnny Paycheck .
Another great success was You Never Even Called Me By My Name - the original is from Steve Goodmann . The song explains that a country song should definitely include mothers, trains, trucks, prisons or alcohol, otherwise it is not a real country song. In this sense the last stanza reads:
"Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got out of prison,
And I went to pick her up in the rain,
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck,
She got run over by a damned old train."
success
Like Willie Nelson , Johnny Cash , Waylon Jennings , Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard, David Allan Coe was part of the outlaw country scene. He emphasized this affiliation with the song Willie, Waylon and me .
This image is also reinforced by some of his X-rated albums, i.e. albums aimed at adults. It's about sex and racism , which he portrays directly and subjectively. The most famous song is Nigger Fucker , a song that uses racist stereotypes. It is described how the first-person narrator is abandoned by his girlfriend, because she would love the big limb of a " nigger ". Coe himself says that you shouldn't take all of this so seriously.
A wide variety of fringe groups come together at Coes concerts: bikers , cowboys and hippies . Coe has written and interpreted over 280 songs over the course of his career. He had his greatest successes in the 1970s. He has released 28 albums, the most successful being Matter of Life ... and Death (1987).
He has been working with Steve Popovich for some time . He is the founder of Cleveland International, INC. who has worked with stars like Meat Loaf . Coe and Popovich founded their own record label COEPOP Records , on which albums such as Songwriter of the Tear and Biketoberfest '01 were released.
