George Jones (musician)
George Glenn Jones (born September 12, 1931 in Saratoga , Texas , † April 26, 2013 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country musician . He was considered one of the most influential artists and, above all, one of the best singers in the genre.
Life
Childhood and youth
Like many other musicians of his decade, Jones came from a poor background. He learned to play the guitar at the age of nine and soon began making music in the streets of Beaumont. He married for the first time when he was 19. A year later he was divorced and drafted into the Navy.
First steps
After Jones was discharged from the Navy, he met the country singer Sonny Burns know. He performed with him for the first time at the KNUZ Houston Hometown Jamboree and made other appearances in bars and pubs. With Burns he also played his first records in 1953 at Starday Records .
With the sponsorship of Harold Daily, who was a partner in the Starday record company and who became its producer and manager for many years, Jones released his first single, No Money in This Deal , which was a failure, as did subsequent releases. It wasn't until Why, Baby, Why made it to number four on the country charts in 1955. This hit was followed by more top ten placements, and in 1959 White Lightning reached the top of the country charts. In the meantime, Jones was known as "Thumper" Jones with titles such as Rock It , How Come It and Who Shot Sam? switched to rockabilly .
In 1962, at the instigation of his manager, he moved to United Artists Records (a subsidiary of the film company United Artists ). There he recorded a series of quite successful singles with Melba Montgomery . In 1965 he changed the record company again. At Musicor he produced a large number of songs and was almost constantly represented in the country charts, even if the really big hits were rare. His most famous hits from this period are Love Bug and A Good Year for the Roses . During the 1960s Jones appeared more on television, for example in 1962 in the "Pet Milk" Grand Ole Opry , in 1965 in the music film Country Music on Broadway , and in the late 1970s also appeared in the program That Good Old Nashville Music on. An appearance in the program The Johnny Cash Show , which is to a certain extent known as a "musical rock solid" , was also completed. His television repertoire included hits like White Lightning , She Thinks I Still Care and his huge hit The Race Is On . Jones was accompanied for a long time by his band The Jones Boys with Freddie Haws as guitarist and James Holley on bass or as harmony singer. Previously, Johnny Paycheck played in this position for a short time .
Marriage to Tammy Wynette
In 1968, divorced for the second time, Jones moved to Nashville . Here he met Tammy Wynette , ten years his junior , who had just made it to the top. The two married at the beginning of 1969. Jones changed both his manager and the record label again on this occasion. In 1971 he signed with Epic Records , the company that his wife was also under contract. Jones and Wynette had become superstars of the country scene through their marriage. A number of very successful duets were produced and both continued to release solo records.
The marriage soon went into crisis. The two strong personalities, who found it difficult to adapt and subordinate themselves, increasingly fought their violent arguments in public. In addition, there were massive alcohol problems at Jones. In this context, a special kind of argument broke out between the couple one day when Tammy Wynette took the car keys of all five cars they shared in order to prevent an alcoholic drive. However, George Jones did not abandon his plan to go into town and made this trip with the lawnmower tractor without further ado, not without giving in to his urge to urinate in public during this excursion.
The joint recordings did not suffer from the alcohol-related disputes. Her biggest hits were We're Gonna Hold On in 1973 and Golden Ring in 1976 . Wynette left Jones in 1974; a year later the marriage ended in divorce. The two continued to play records together.
The further career
After the divorce, Jones's alcohol problems worsened and he became addicted to cocaine. George Jones often had to cancel concerts because of drunkenness. He was nicknamed "No-Show Jones" for it. Hit parade successes became rarer. In 1980 he made it to the top of the country charts again with He Stopped Loving Her Today . In the same year he released the album I Am What I Am , which sold more than a million copies and went platinum. Despite his successes, Jones failed to get off drugs. He rioted in public and had problems with the police.
In 1983 he married for the fourth time. With the help of his wife Nancy, he finally managed to keep his alcohol consumption under control for at least a while. Meanwhile, younger country singers had taken over the helm. Jones continued to produce records, but the big successes failed to materialize. In 1998 he had a serious car accident that nearly cost him his life. He spent over a week in the intensive care unit. After this traumatic experience, he finally managed to free himself from alcohol and drug addiction, always supported by Nancy. His album Cold Hard Truth , half before and half after the accident, is considered one of his best today.
In 1992 Jones received the greatest honor that country music can bestow: he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame . In 1995 he published his biography: I Lived to Tell it All .
George Jones, also known as "the Possum ", played around 100 concerts a year even when he was old. In 2008 his album Burn Your Playhouse Down: The Unreleased Duets came back to number 15 on the country charts, despite the sometimes considerable age of the material. In spring 2012 he had to survive two hospital stays because of a respiratory infection, but was back on stage in June. He died in a Nashville hospital in 2013 at the age of 81.
meaning
Since his first successes, George Jones was considered one of the best genre singers. Waylon Jennings put his meaning in a nutshell: "If we could all sound the way we wanted, we would all sound like George Jones." But beyond the genre, his importance as one of the great voices of the USA was undisputed: In a survey by the American edition of Rolling Stone , he landed in a list of the hundred best singers of all time - the laudatory speech was given by James Taylor . Only Johnny Cash and Hank Williams came out of his genre before Jones. Keith Richards , who recorded the song Say It's Not You in a duet with him, quotes Frank Sinatra in his book Life : "George Jones is the second best singer in this country." Richards adds smugly: "And who is the best, Frank? "
