Shelby Lynne (born October 22, 1968 in Quantico , Virginia , as Shelby Lynne Moorer ) is a Grammy- winning American singer-songwriter and musician . She is the older sister of Allison Moorer .

Career

Shelby Lynne grew up in Jackson , Alabama . In 1986, Lynne and her sister, Alison Moorer, witnessed her father killing her mother first and then himself. Lynne then took care of her sister and entered into a short-term marriage. The extended suicide of her father processed Lynne years later, among others, in the song Heaven's Only Days Down the Road (2011), which ends with two shots.

To start a career in the music business, Lynne eventually moved to Nashville. She was discovered during a rehearsal for an engagement at the Opryland USA theme park in Nashville. Through a demo tape, she got the chance to appear on the Nashville Now TV show in 1987 . After this performance, several record companies became interested in the talented singer. Lynne eventually signed a recording deal with Epic . The first single was a duet with George Jones: If I Could Bottle This Up . By 1991 Lynne released three albums and several singles, none of which brought the hoped-for breakthrough in the country mainstream. Nevertheless, during this period, you got a number of smaller hits in the country charts. Things Are Tough All Over was the biggest hit in 1990 at number 23. The album Tough All Over stayed in the country charts for 50 weeks. She was also named "Best New Singer" at the Academy of Country Music Awards .

As a result, Lynne changed record labels, always trying to become a star in Nashville. But neither the western swing of Temptation (1993) nor the return to the mainstream on Restless (1995) managed to establish Lynne as a star. With Slow Me Down , she reached the American country charts for the last time in 1995 (59th place). After that, the singer disappeared from the headlines for a few years.

With the album I Am Shelby Lynne , which was first released in Europe in 1999, Lynne finally made the switch to the singer-songwriter field with his own compositions, musically enriched with pop , soul and blues . At the beginning of 2000 Jürgen von der Lippe presented Lynne in his game show Money or Love . As a result, I Am Shelby Lynne reached the German album charts (number 25). In Great Britain she had a respectable success with the released single Leavin . The success curve was also up in the USA. The peak came in February 2001 when Lynne was awarded a Grammy for Best Newcomer, which was remarkable given that Lynne had already released five albums by then and had worked in the music business for over thirteen years.

The rockier album Love, Shelby was followed by a collaboration with producer Glen Ballard , who had previously decisively advanced Alanis Morissette's career . The hope of landing a similarly great success with Lynne, however, was not fulfilled. The CD narrowly failed in the top 100 in the USA. The included song Killin 'Kind was selected for the soundtrack to the movie Bridget Jones - Chocolate for Breakfast . Lynne then signed for two albums with Capitol and made her theatrical debut in 2005 as Carrie Cash in the Johnny Cash biography Walk the Line . In 2004 she also played the song Run Away with the American alternative band Live for their Best-of Awake .

Lynne's album Just a Little Lovin ' (2008) only contained songs by Dusty Springfield , with whom the singer was often compared in the past , apart from one original composition . She also worked on the “first-class cover album ” with producer Phil Ramone , who also produced records for Dusty Springfield in the 1960s. Lynne eventually climbed to number 41 on the American album charts with Just a Little Lovin ' , her greatest success to date.

Lynne then founded her own label Everso and released two albums there in 2010: Tears, Lies, and Alibis and Merry Christmas . In September, Lynne and her sister Allison Moorer announced that they were going on tour together for the first time. “Side by Side” is supposed to be an “intimate acoustic show”.
