Bridget Jones - On the verge of madness

It is the film adaptation of the novel by Helen Fielding , which is a modern twist on the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen understands. The sequel to the novel was filmed in 2004 under the title Bridget Jones - On the Edge of Madness . Bridget Jones' Baby , the third installment in the series, was released in German cinemas on October 20, 2016 .

action

Bridget Jones is frustrated because she is over 30 years old, still single, and feels unattractive. So on New Year's Day she decides that everything has to be different. She begins to keep a diary - of her attempts to lose weight, quit smoking and meet a suitable man. The lawyer Mark Darcy, with whom her mother wants to pair her up, doesn't seem like a suitable candidate at first glance. Bridget's spontaneous judgment is boring and arrogant , and there is also a mutual dislike.

Instead, Bridget falls in love with her boss, the handsome Hallodri Daniel Cleaver. Bridget is only too happy to overlook his bad qualities when he actually casts an eye on her. The single existence is over, Bridget is bursting with self-confidence. At various small encounters it turns out that Mark and Daniel know each other from before and hate each other heartily, but Daniel does not give the reason for this quite correctly.

Bridget experiences a number of mishaps in her job and her parents' marriage goes into a serious crisis. Her mother leaves her father for someone else. Daniel is also interested in other women and cheats on Bridget with a work colleague, which in turn puts Bridget into a depressive phase. At least there are opportunities to get to know Mark better and to find out that he is not such a big bore, on the contrary. At the end of the year, Bridget can confide in her diary that although she lost the fight against her pounds and smoking, she won Mark Darcy.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews, earning an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 154 reviews. At Metacritic , a Metascore of 66, based on 33 reviews, could be achieved.

According to the lexicon of international films , "lovably drawn characters, precise everyday observations and a hard and warm humor [...] distinguish the film from the majority of the genre." It is a "lively comedy that is consistently told from the point of view of women". prisma-online , on the other hand, thinks that the "exaggerated staging, bad timing and cinematic - not content-related - embarrassments [...] in this typical relationship comedy would be extremely annoying". For Carsten Scheibe on stern.de the film is “a hateful film with a brilliant leading actress. The film […] thrives on all these embarrassing moments in the life of a […] woman who doesn't expect much from life - and gets even less. ”Carsten Baumgardt wrote on film starts that the film shone“ with wit, charm, self-irony and one gorgeous playing Renée Zellweger, who should be an Oscar nomination after the Golden Globe for "Nurse Betty".
