Gemma Jones (* 4. December 1942 in London , England , as Jennifer Jones ) is a British theater and film actress .

Life

Gemma Jones was born in London to the actor Griffith Jones (1909–2007) and his wife Irene (1911–1985, nee Isaacs). Her younger brother Nicholas Jones (* 1946) also works as an actor. From a relationship with the actor Sebastian Graham Jones (1947-2004) she has the son Luke, who is now a producer in the film business.

Gemma Jones attended the prestigious London Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , where she received her acting training. She has been working as an actress since 1962, initially mainly taking on theater roles. In 1966 she played the role of opera singer Giuseppina Strepponi in After Aida at the Old Vic Theater ; then she was to be seen on the main stages of London. For example, in 2011 she appeared as Queen Margaret at the side of Kevin Spacey in an Old Vic production of Shakespeare's Richard III. on.

Jones has appeared regularly in British television productions since the early 1960s. Among other things, she played Princess Victoria in the British television series Fall of Eagle in 1974 and the role of Louisa Trotter in the BBC drama The Duchess of Duke Street from 1976 to 1977 . From 2007 to 2008 she had a recurring role in the television series Spooks - In the sights of MI5 . She won the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2015 for her appearance in the British television film Marvelous .

In 1995 Jones starred in the role of Mrs. Dashwood in the drama Sense and Sensibility, alongside Kate Winslet , Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson . Then she increasingly took on cinema roles. She became known to a wide audience for her role as mother of the title character in the film comedies Bridget Jones - Chocolate for Breakfast (2001), Bridget Jones - On the Edge of Wahnsinns (2004) and Bridget Jones' Baby (2016). She also played the role of the caring school nurse Madame Pomfrey in three Harry Potter films .
