Gentleman Jack is a British - American drama series conceived, written, produced and directed by Sally Wainwright . It is about the in 19th century living Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones ), an English landowner and industrialist . The series, which was originally to be called Shibden Hall like her place of residence, is based on Lister's diaries, which are over four million words long and written by her in a secret code. Gentleman Jack first aired on HBO in the United States on April 22, 2019 . Also in the UK on BBC One , first broadcast on May 19, 2019 and in the German-speaking area on Sky 1 HD .

The series is based on the life of Anne Lister, an English landowner, industrialist, diary writer, mountaineer and traveler from Yorkshire. She has kept diaries in great detail all of her life, including her lesbian relationships, financial worries, industrial activities, and work to improve Shibden Hall in West Yorkshire. Lister is often referred to as "the first modern lesbian" because of her clear self-awareness and openly lesbian lifestyle.
The series takes place around the time when Lister, also called "Fred" by her friends, meets Ann Walker and starts a relationship with her. At the same time, she decides to mine coal on her land, which the local industrialists, the Rawson brothers, do not like. They own the neighboring property and have secretly started stealing coal from Lister underground.
