biography

Education and film debut

Sofie Gråbøl was born in 1968 as Anne Sofie Gråbøl near Copenhagen. The sister of the two years older film director Niels Gråbøl grew up in a politically oriented, progressive family in the 1970s and attended a Christian private school from the 4th grade. After completing the 10th grade, she found a job in the Copenhagen luxury hotel Kong Frederik . The autodidact, who never attended drama school, made her film debut in 1986 in Henning Carlsen's Die Augen des Wolfes . She had become aware of the role by chance through a newspaper advertisement. In the biography about Paul Gauguin , Gråbøl was seen as the young lover of the French painter (played by Donald Sutherland ). The part of Judith Molard brought her the most important Danish film awards Bodil and Robert for Best Supporting Actress just a year later .

Also in 1986, the 17-year-old starred in Astrid Henning-Jensen's award-winning film adaptation of Childhood Street , which is set in Copenhagen in the 1930s. In the youth film, Gråbøl took on the lead role of 14-year-old Ester, the daughter of a socialist loyal to the line, who tries to escape the modest living conditions in which she grows up by writing poetry. Although she was part of the acting ensemble of Bille August's Oscar-winning film Pelle, the Conqueror (1987) a year later , Gråbøl was unable to match the great success of her first two film roles in the late 1980s. She then began studying theology, which she broke off after a semester, among other things, worked in a bookstore and appeared in Jorden er venomig in 1988 , her brother's short film.

Role offers for film and television

In 1991 Gråbøl applied unsuccessfully for a place at the State Theater School in Copenhagen. She then began to appear on Danish television and was back in international cinema with the role of Max von Sydow's young lover in Krzysztof Zanussi's Der Klang der Stille (1992). A year later she was able to build on earlier successes with the female lead in Anders Refn's Black Harvest (1993). In the drama that takes place at the turn of the century, she took on the role of the sensitive Clara, daughter of a large landowning family who rebelled against the irascible and extravagant father (played by Ole Ernst ). The film earned Gråbøl high praise from the professional critics and one year later she again received the awards from the Danish Film Academy and the Danish Film Critics Association , but this time for Best Actress . In the past, the 1.75 m tall actress called herself to a wide international audience in 1994 with Ole Bornedal's cult thriller Nightwatch (1994). In the film she acted as a friend of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau . Nightwatch was to be filmed again three years later in Hollywood by Bornedal with Ewan McGregor and Patricia Arquette in the leading roles.

In the late 1990s, Gråbøl, who is considered shy by the public, followed more offers in the comedy field and made a name for herself as a character actress with productions such as Søren Kragh-Jacobsen's dogma film Mifune and Susanne Biers The Only Right One (both 1999). From then on, she moved between the two genres and was most recently for the dramas Lad de små børn (2004) by Paprika Steen and Anklaget (2005) by Jacob Thuesen result the price of two Danish Film Academy as Best Actress . In Lad de små børn she was seen as a married social worker Britt who tries to come to terms with the accidental death of their 12-year-old daughter together with her husband (played by Mikael Birkkjær ). In the indictment , she again took on the role of wife and mother, whose family happiness threatens to break when the daughter, who tends to lie, reports of sexual assault by her father. The Danish television audience stayed Gråbøl through the female lead in Søren Sveistrup's series Nikolaj og Julie (2002-2003), which was awarded the International Emmy Award .

Gråbøl became known to a broad German audience in 2008 through renewed collaboration with Sveistrup on the series Kommissarin Lund - Das Verbrechen (2007). She received an Emmy nomination for best actress for the title role of the introverted Copenhagen Detective Inspector, in which she played a male style for the first time. The format was successfully broadcast in 10 parts from September to November 2008 by the German television broadcaster ZDF , after Commissioner Lund had achieved audience ratings of an average of 70 to 80 percent in Denmark a year earlier. The series was also successful in Great Britain, where it won the British Academy Television Award in 2011 . With the sequel to Commissioner Lund - Das Verbrechen II (2009), which was broadcast by ZDF from the end of September 2010, Gråbøl was able to build on the previous success. The re-portrayal of Sarah Lund earned her a nomination for the Acting Award of the Monte Carlo Television Festival , while in the United States the material was adapted for television from 2011 under the title The Killing with Mireille Enos . Also in 2011, Gråbøl made a guest appearance as Sarah Lund on the British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous .

From the end of September 2012 a ten-part third season of Commissioner Lund was broadcast on Danish television (from February 2013 also on German television). In the same year Gråbøl was represented with a guest role in the US remake, The Killing , where she appeared in an episode as Dep. Attorney Christina Niilsen appeared.

Theater work

Parallel to her work in film and television, Gråbøl began appearing on Danish theater stages from the early 1990s. Initially unsettled by the lack of acting training, she was in the following years both in classic Shakespeare roles as Desdemona in Othello (Østre Gasværk Theater) and as Hermione in Ein Wintermärchen (Royal Theater), as well as works by well-known Scandinavian authors such as Henrik Ibsen Ghosts (Danish: Gengangere ) to see. In 2002 she won the Reumert Theater Prize for Best Supporting Actress for Ibsen’s drama . In 2008 she was again awarded the prestigious Danish Theater Prize for her performance in August Strindberg's Ein Traumspiel ( Et drømmespil ) at the Betty Nansen Theater, this time as Best Actress . In 2011 she was seen at the Skuespilhuset, store scene as Emilie in Emmet Feigenberg's production of Fanny and Alexander .

Private life and public engagement

Sofie Gråbøl lives in Copenhagen. From 1994 to 2006 she was married to the six years older Danish film editor and director Jacob Thuesen , with whom she worked on the short film Livsforsikringen (2003) and the feature film Anklaget (2005). This relationship resulted in two children. In the early 1990s, Gråbøl was in a relationship with the Danish director Søren Fauli , in whose films De skrigende halse (1993) and En store Kul-Tur (1996) she participated.

In 2006 she was involved with five other actors as the spokeswoman for a CD box for the Danish Bible Society containing texts from the New Testament . Gråbøl's readings from the New Testament were published again in 2011, when the Bible appeared on Apple iPad and iPhone in Denmark . In the same year she got involved with other actors like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau , Sidse Babett Knudsen , Lars Mikkelsen , Ghita Nørby and Sonja Richter for the Danish art and culture campaign "Vild med Kunst".
