Lars Dittmann Mikkelsen (born May 6, 1964 ) is a Danish actor who is best known in Germany for his roles as Charles Augustus Magnussen in the BBC series Sherlock and as Viktor Petrov in the US television series House of Cards .

Life

Lars Mikkelsen grew up with his younger brother Mads , who is also an actor, in Copenhagen, where he attended the State Theater School from 1991 to 1995. He then received engagements at various Danish stages, including as Mephisto at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen or at the Østre Gasværk Theater, where he played Othello .

In parallel to his theater career, he appeared in Danish film and television productions from the mid-1990s. He has appeared in the popular television series Ederkoppen (2000) and Nikolaj og Julie (2003), while he worked alongside his brother in the Emmy- winning series Unit One - The Specialists (2002). He also appeared with him in Lotte Svendsen's short film Café Hector (1996) or Ole Christian Madsen's film production Days of Wrath (2008). He played his most successful film role to date again under the direction of Ole Christian Madsen in his dogma film Kira (2001). In the drama he was seen as the husband of Stine Stengade , who dares to return to everyday life with children after a stay in psychiatry. For the part of Mads he received a nomination for the Danish Film Prize Bodil for Best Actor in 2002 .

Mikkelsen became known to a broad German-speaking audience through the ZDF co-production Kommissarin Lund - Das Verbrechen at Sofie Gråbøl's side . In the series, which was broadcast in Germany from September to November 2008, he took on the role of school senator Troels Hartmann, who is confronted with the murder of a schoolgirl in the middle of the election campaign for the mayor's office in Copenhagen. In 2014, Mikkelsen played Sherlock Charles Augustus Magnussen, the opponent of Sherlock Holmes, in the third season of the BBC television series . Lars Mikkelsen has been married to his colleague Anette Støvelbæk since 1989 . The marriage resulted in two sons.
