biography

Training and theater work

The daughter of two teachers was born in Copenhagen in 1972 and moved to Odsherred with her family at the age of three . Stine Stengade's parents divorced when she was a child. She then grew up with her mother and a stepfather in Føllenslev near Kalundborg , in Vestsjælland . As a child she was very fond of football and played for the Kalundborg club. From the age of twelve she was fascinated by acting, after having come into contact with the theater through school in Kalundborg. After attending Testrup University, the 19-year-old applied unsuccessfully for a place at the Aarhus Theater School . Stengade then began to study Danish at the University of Copenhagen . She also took private acting lessons and applied to all three Copenhagen theater schools. After a year, Stengade dropped out when she was accepted by the State Theater School. There she trained as an actress from 1994 to 1998.

After completing her training, Stengade began a career as a stage actress which led her to the Royal Theater and the Rialto Theater in Copenhagen, among others . The freedom-loving Dane did not become a member of an ensemble, despite two offers from the Royal Theater . Interrupted by a two-year baby break from 2003 to 2005, she also performed successfully on small theater stages in her home country. Stengade's theater work includes such well-known roles as Irina in Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters (1998; Rialto Theater), the viola in the Shakespeare comedy Was ihr wollt (2001; Grønnegårds Theater), Marguerite Gautier in Alexandre Dumas ' Die Camelliendame ( 2002 with Thure Lindhardt ; Gladsaxe Theater), as well as other leading roles such as the granddaughter of Ghita Nørby in Marguerite Duras ' Savannah Bay (1999; Rialto Theater), Honoré de Balzac's The Beautiful Troublemaker , Molière's The Misanthrope and the Euripides tragedy Phaidra . Stengade also appeared on stage in modern Scandinavian theater material. These include the part of Helene alongside Ulf Pilgaard and Thomas Bo Larsen in the production of Thomas Vinterberg's Dogma film Das Fest (2007; Østre-Gasværk-Theater) and the role of the drug addict prostitute alongside Anders W. Berthelsen in Lars Noréns piece Politkovskaya In Memoriam (2008; Edison Theater). In 2011 she appeared at the Aarhus Theater in Ingmar Bergman's Scenes of a Marriage as Marianne.

Film career

Parallel to her work at the theater, Stengade made her film debut in 1996 while she was still training to play a supporting role in Anders Rønnow Klarlund's award-winning drama Den attende . However, she only became known to a broad Danish audience from 2000 through the female lead alongside Jakob Cedergren and Lars Mikkelsen in Ole Christian Madsen's multi-part television series Edderkoppen . She received praise from Danish critics for playing the part of the rich and attractive Lisbeth Gordan in the post-war Denmark production of 1949. She compared this with the well-known actress Bodil Kjer and she also won the Reumert Talent Prize in 2000. Stengade then became the muse of Ole Christian Madsen, who uses her in most of his film and television works and with whom she also found her private happiness . The joint feature film Kira (2001) followed a year later . In the drama, staged according to dogma rules, Stengade slipped into the role of the unstable and upper-class heroine who, after a stay in psychiatry, dares the agonizing return to everyday life with her husband (played by Lars Mikkelsen) and children. As for every role, Stengade was inspired by music, in this case by the melancholy songs of the Belgian rock group dEUS . She also took part in the film music with her soprano voice .

The breakthrough as a film actress in her home country followed with Kira . In 2002, the film and Stengade, respectively, were honored with Denmark's most important film awards, Bodil and Robert , for Best Actress . In Germany, Kira received a similarly positive reception and Stengade's performance was compared with the portraits of women by Gena Rowlands and Emily Watson in John Cassavete's A Woman Under Influence (1978) and Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves (1996), respectively . Film critic Peter Körte from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung emphasized Stengade's uninterrupted shifting "between child, girl and seductress, between defiance, sadness and sudden freezing" . "Her round, large face may not be classically beautiful, but the proportions between the wide, sensual mouth and the large dark eyes give it an irresistible charisma," says Körte.

After the success of her first leading role in the cinema, the 1.65-meter-tall actress took over roles in Danish short film projects and television series without exception, also due to a baby break. This also included the award-winning crime series Unit One - The Specialists with Mads Mikkelsen , in which she again acted under the direction of Ole Christian Madsen. It wasn't until 2005 that Stengade was featured in a feature film with the supporting role of Natasha in Jonas Elmer's comedy Nynne . A year later, Madsen staged his muse together with Mads Mikkelsen in the relationship drama Prague (2006) as a loveless Copenhagen couple, whose relationship breaks up on a trip to the eponymous Czech capital. For her performance as introverted Maja, Stengade again received a Bodil nomination for Best Actress , but was left behind compared to her compatriot Trine Dyrholm ( En Soap ). In 2008 she worked with Madsen for the fifth time on the world war drama Days of Anger , which focuses on two undercover killers (played by Mads Mikkelsen and Thure Lindhardt) who kill Danish collaborators on behalf of the resistance against the German occupiers. In the critically acclaimed film, she played the role of the opaque and seductive double agent Ketty. This was followed by appearances in the Danish youth film Timetrip - The Curse of the Viking Witch (2009) as well as a trip to British television with the television series Above Suspicion: Deadly Intent (2011). In February 2011 she said in an interview with the Danish newspaper Politiken that she would like to appear more in comedies. In autumn of the same year she was seen at the Betty-Nansen-Theater in Copenhagen in a production by Alexa Ther as Anna Karenina .

Stine Stengade has been in a relationship with Ole Christian Madsen since 2001 , for whom she left her partner at the time. Madsen, in turn, gave up family life with his wife and two children for the relationship. The mother of one son lives in Copenhagen.

In 2005, Stengade, who has a penchant for the works of writer Karen Blixen and the music of Irish rock band U2 , took part in the first season of the television show Vild med dans , the Danish version of Strictly Come Dancing or Let's Dance . In addition to English, she speaks German, Swedish, Norwegian and French and one of her hobbies is horse riding.
