The Lions played a three-match international series against the South African Springboks as well as eight games against various national teams. The last tour took the Lions to New Zealand in 2005 . They were last guests in South Africa in 1997; then they won the series 2-1. In 2009 the Springboks won their first two international games, after which the Lions won the final game.

Squad

The Lions roster was announced on April 21st. It originally comprised 14 Irish, 13 Welsh, eight English and two Scots. Tomás O'Leary dropped out in the run-up to the tour due to a broken ankle and was replaced by Mike Blair . Tom Shanklin was also unable to travel because he suffered a shoulder injury. In addition, Alan Quinlan , who was banned for twelve weeks in the Heineken Cup semi-final against Leinster, was absent for unsportsmanlike conduct . He was replaced by Tom Croft . Jerry Flannery also had to be replaced after injuring his elbow. Ross Ford was nominated for him . Leigh Halfpenny was initially unable to take the tour, he traveled to South Africa to play against the Cheetahs. For him, James Hook came into the squad. Halfpenny was injured again a few days after arriving in South Africa and had to leave. After a few minor injuries, Irish rider Gordon D'Arcy was added to the squad ahead of the game against the Golden Lions. Stephen Ferris had to leave on June 9th after a tear in his knee. He was replaced by the Welsh captain Ryan Jones , who had to leave after a day after a medical examination. Euan Murray injured his ankle in the game against the Southern Kings and had to leave the tour early. John Hayes was nominated for him . After the first test against South Africa, the Englishman Tim Payne was added to the squad because Andrew Sheridan was only partially operational due to stubborn back problems.
