Leigh Halfpenny (born December 22, 1988 in Swansea ) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays for the Scarlets and for the Welsh national team. He is used in the positions outside three quarters and goalkeeper .
Halfpenny spent his youth at Neath RFC from his hometown. He went through all youth national teams and took part in six-nation tournaments and world championships in different age groups. For the 2007/08 season he moved to the Cardiff RFC . Due to his outstanding performance at the U20 World Cup, he was appointed to the squad of the Blues and came against Ulster in May 2008 for his first appearance in the Magners League . In the 2008/09 season he secured a regular place, put seven attempts in the first six games and was consequently included in the ranks of the national team. He made his debut for Wales on November 8, 2008 against South Africa and has been part of the squad since then. In 2009 he won the EDF Energy Cup with the Blues .
On April 21, 2009 he was nominated by Ian McGeechan after only six internationals for the tour of the British and Irish Lions to South Africa . He could not start the tour at first and only traveled to the game against the Free State Cheetahs . Soon after, however, he had to leave again due to another injury.
