LM-47 ( Russian ЛМ-47 ) is the name of a tram vehicle built by the Wagonoremontny Sawod in Leningrad (WARS, today Peterburgski Tramwajno-Mechanitscheski Sawod, Saint Petersburg , Russia ) . The abbreviation LM means L eningradski M otorny ( Russian Ленинградский Моторный , German Leningrad railcars), the number 47 corresponds to the developing 1947. Usually drove the railcar in pair LP-47 - a sidecar , the non-driven variant of the LM-47 . The letter P stands for Prizepnoi ( Russian прицепной , German sidecar). The mini-trains made up of LM-47 multiple units and LP-47 side cars were often referred to as LM / LP-47 . Both cars were way vehicles and perverse only on lines with turning loops or triangles to the path statements.
After the Second World War , the Leningrad tram company urgently needed to expand its vehicle fleet . Most of the pre-war vehicles were destroyed or badly damaged by air strikes or artillery fire during the Leningrad blockade , and the repair of the remaining vehicles was the first step in rebuilding the operation. Some damaged four-axle LM-33 power units and LP-33 side cars only retained the substructure with the bogies without the destroyed wooden car body. The WARS installed a new car body made entirely of metal on these chassis. Such conversions were called LM-47 (railcar) and LP-47 (sidecar). However, the number of damaged LM / LP-33s that could be used for this purpose was limited, which is why the management of the Leningrad tram company asked about the development of a new vehicle. The result of these efforts was the design of the LM / LP-49 .
Practice showed that the combination of the LM-33 chassis and the new all-metal car body was very difficult and that the maximum speed and acceleration remained below the desired values. As a result of this fact, its external shape and partly cream-colored paint, the car had the unofficial nickname " elephant " ( Russian Слон ). The LM / LP-47 only ran in Leningrad as mini trains or solo multiple units from 1947 to 1973. They were durable, safe and reliable, but difficult to control.
Since the end of the 1960s, the management of the Soviet transport company took the vehicles out of date from passenger operation. Their technical condition was still quite good, so they were all used as various auxiliary vehicles. Later, an LM / LP-47 auxiliary train was returned to its original condition for museum use.
