Ryan Paul Jones (born March 13, 1981 in Newport ) is a Welsh rugby union player who is used as a winger or number eight . He is the captain of the Welsh national team and active for the Ospreys .

Jones did not start rugby until he was 17, having previously been a goalkeeper in football . His first professional season he spent with the Celtic Warriors , which disbanded after this season. He then switched to the Ospreys, with whom he won the Celtic League title in his first season .

In the same season Jones completed his first international match for Wales against South Africa . He was part of the selection team that won the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2005 . The Welsh was able to repeat this success in 2008 with Jones as captain. Because of this achievement, he was nominated for Player of the Year by the International Rugby Board . His teammate Shane Williams won the election.

In 2005 he was part of the British and Irish Lions tour . However, he only joined the squad when Simon Taylor was injured. His non-nomination for the Lions' 2009 tour to South Africa comes as a big surprise, as he has had many successes as captain of the Welsh and Ospreys in the past. His form fluctuations in the run-up to the nominations, however, moved the coaching team to initially not accept him into the ranks of the Lions. He moved into the squad during the tour after Stephen Ferris was injured. He had to leave after only one day because he was diagnosed with a concussion .
