His next game followed at the Five Nations in 1998 against England . In 2003 he was the first captain of the national team when they met Scotland .
In the first game of the Six Nations in 2005 against England, Williams played his 50th international game and played an important role for the team that won the Grand Slam at the end of the tournament . So he contributed two attempts against France when the Welsh already believed they were on the losing side. Because of his achievements, he was voted player of the tournament.

He surprisingly returned to the national team in January 2008 and was part of the Welsh team that was able to win the Grand Slam again after 2005 under new coach Warren Gatland . He was elected to the tournament's team by the BBC .
