Martyn Elwyn Williams , MBE (born September 1, 1975 in Pontypridd ) is a Welsh rugby union player who is used in the position of winger . He plays for the Cardiff Blues and is part of the Welsh national team .

Career

Williams began his career at Pontypridd RFC , with which he was able to secure the 1997 Welsh championship title . In 1999 he moved to Cardiff , where he still plays today. Between 2002 and 2005 he was captain of the RFC or the Blues until Rhys Williams replaced him.

Williams played his first international match in 1996 against the Barbarians , and in the same year he had already played for the reserve of the national team. His next game followed at the Five Nations in 1998 against England . In 2003 he was the first captain of the national team when they met Scotland .

In the first game of the Six Nations in 2005 against England, Williams played his 50th international game and played an important role for the team that won the Grand Slam at the end of the tournament . So he contributed two attempts against France when the Welsh already believed they were on the losing side. Because of his achievements, he was voted player of the tournament.

On October 1, 2007, Williams announced his temporary retirement after the disappointing elimination of the Welsh in the preliminary round of the World Cup . He surprisingly returned to the national team in January 2008 and was part of the Welsh team that was able to win the Grand Slam again after 2005 under new coach Warren Gatland . He was elected to the tournament's team by the BBC .

Williams won the EDF Energy Cup in 2009 with the Blues . He was voted Man of the Match in the final against Gloucester . On April 21, he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa , his third Lions tour.
