Pontypridd
Pontypridd is a city in south Wales , about 25 kilometers north of Cardiff . It has a population of about 33,000 and is part of the Rhondda Cynon Taf local government . The musician Tom Jones was born in the Treforest district .
The name Pontypridd comes from Welsh and means "bridge on the earthen house" . With the bridge is meant the bridge over the River Taff , which is located near the village. The city is famous for this stone bridge built by William Edwards in 1755 .
Pontypridd is the seat of the University of Glamorgan , which emerged in 1992 from the Polytechnic of Wales (founded in 1913 as South Wales and Monmouth School of Mines , later Glamorgan College of Technology and Glamorgan Polytechnic ).

The town was once a center of the British steel industry and had the longest railway siding in Great Britain as one of the main hubs for the transport of coal and iron along the Taff Vale Railway to the ports of Cardiff , Barry and Newport .
