Merlyn Rees (born December 18, 1920 in Cilfynydd near Pontypridd , South Wales , † January 5, 2006 ), later Merlyn Merlyn-Rees, Baron Merlyn-Rees , PC , was from 1963 to 1992 for the Labor Party in the British Parliament .

Life

Rees attended Goldsmiths College , the London School of Economics , the Institute of Education and the University of London .

He was a teacher at his old school in Harrow from 1949 to 1960, teaching economics and history . Rees was Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from March 1974 to September 1976. From September 10, 1976 to May 4, 1979 Rees was British Home Secretary. In 1992 he was named a life peer as Baron Merlyn-Rees , of Morley and South Leeds in the counties of West Yorkshire and of Cilfynydd in the counties of Mid Glamorgan .

In his book Northern Ireland: A Personal Perspective , he wrote of his views on Northern Ireland .

He was President of the Video Standards Council and Chancellor of the University of Glamorgan .

He died in 2006 after several strokes at the age of 85.
