history

The School of Mines was founded in 1913 to train junior workers in the South Wales coal industry, primarily in mining and engineering . She later became Glamorgan Polytechnic, then Polytechnic of Wales. The last renaming took place in 1992. The UoG is one of the so-called "New Universities" because it emerged from a polytechnic. In 2013 the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport merged to form the University of South Wales.
