Gumel is a city in the Nigerian state of Jigawa and is located in the far north of Nigeria. According to a calculation from 2012, the city has 22,627 inhabitants.

Gumel is 121 km northeast of Kano and about 20 km south of the border with Niger . In addition to millet and sorghum , mainly peanuts are grown in the vicinity of the city , which are transported to Kano for export. Limestone and kieselguhr deposits are mined on site. An expressway connects Gumel with Kano, Hadejia and Katagum . Gumel is also a traditional emirate that was founded around 1750 and belonged to Kanem-Bornu from 1754 . The center of the emirate was relocated in 1864 from Toumbi, which is now in Niger, to today's Gumel.

Gumel and its surroundings form one of the 27 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Jigawa with an area of 223.47 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 48,583 inhabitants and thus a population density of 217 inhabitants per km².
