Habu Gumel

Habu Ahmed Gumel (born April 1, 1949 ) is a Nigerian engineer and sports official.

General

Habu Gumel studied at the Institute of Civil Construction in Kiev in the former Soviet Union (now Ukraine ), making 1976 his Bachelor and Master as a civil engineer . Back in Nigeria, he was able to get involved as an engineer in many different municipal and state construction and development programs.

Career as a sports official

Gumel was an active volleyball player. After his career, he became chairman of the Nigerian Volleyball Association in 1988. In 1997 he was appointed Vice President of the African Volleyball Federation. From 1997 to 2001 he was treasurer of the Nigerian NOK. From 2001 to 2010 and since 2014 he has been the President of the Nigerian NOC.

Since 1998 he has been the financial secretary of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball and since 2008 the vice-president. For the FIVB he worked as technical director for the London 2012 Olympics .

Gumel was or is active in other various organizations. From 2002 to 2003 he was a committee member of the African Games , and from 2005 to 2007 Technical Director of the Abuja bid committee for hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games . From 2005 to 2009 he was President of Zone 3 of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). He has been the treasurer of ANOCA since 2009.

Activities within the IOC

Habu Gumel was elected an IOC member in 2009. Since then he has been a member of various IOC commissions. From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of the Sports and Environment Commission, and from 2014 to 2015 of the TV Rights and New Media Commission. Since 2013 he has been a member of the coordination commission for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
