The III. The Summer Youth Olympic Games were held in Buenos Aires from October 6th to 18th, 2018 . In the Argentine capital, 3,348 athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 fought for medals in 185 competitions. In July 2013, Buenos Aires was awarded the contract by the IOC . The cities of Buenos Aires, Glasgow , Guadalajara , Medellín , Poznan and Rotterdam had originally applied for the organization, and Poznan withdrew his candidacy in October 2012.

The application process to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games began on September 15, 2011. The IOC announced the six candidate cities ( Buenos Aires , Glasgow , Guadalajara , Medellín , Rotterdam and Poznan ) in March 2012 and nominated the candidate cities in January 2013 ( Buenos Aires, Medellín, Glasgow). Poznan was one of the favorites, but had to withdraw its application in October 2012 because the city council had refused the necessary financial guarantees. On July 4, 2013, Buenos Aires was the host city of the III. Summer Youth Olympic Games elected by members of the IOC .

The candidacy of Buenos Aires 2018 was announced on August 30, 2011 and is Argentina's first application to host the Youth Olympic Games , but the Argentine capital applied for the Summer Olympic Games in 1936 , 1956 , 1968 and 2004 without success. In October 2013, IOC President Thomas Bach appointed Namibian sprinter Frank Fredericks chairman of the organizing committee of the 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2018. After allegations of corruption, Fredericks resigned from this office in 2017.

The footballer and Olympic champion Lionel Messi was ambassador for the Games in Argentina. He sent a video welcome message to the young athletes in Buenos Aires during the closing ceremony in Nanjing, China in 2014 .

Sports facilities

At the beginning of the application two zones ("Green Corridor" and "Roca Park") were planned for the games in Buenos Aires. Later there was a 4-zone concept, which should allow the games to take place in the city center. In the end, the competitions were held in five large sports facilities and three smaller facilities outside of Buenos Aires.

Green Park
The Green Park was the venue for the competitions in sailing , beach volleyball , triathlon , cycling as well as the corresponding competitions within the framework of modern pentathlon , tennis , horse riding (in the neighboring Club Hipico Argentino ) and futsal (in the neighboring CeNARD ).

Urban Park
Located on the Río de la Plata . The rowing and kayaking competitions as well as the basketball 3x3 tournament, breakdance and sport climbing took place there.

Youth Olympic Park
The zone extends over the Roca Park with an area of ​​200 hectares in the Villa Soldati district in the south of Buenos Aires. The sports facilities for athletics , swimming and diving , modern pentathlon ( shooting , running , fencing and swimming), field hockey , boxing , rhythmic gymnastics , apparatus gymnastics , judo , karate , trampoline gymnastics , taekwondo , weightlifting and wrestling were to be found there. The Youth Olympic Village was also built in this zone. This enabled 65 percent of the athletes to get to their respective sports facilities on foot. The graduation ceremony took place in the Youth Olympic Village.

Tecnópolis
In the industrial park Tecnópolis the competitions of the sports were futsal , table tennis and badminton discharged. Archery , beach handball and the shooting competitions took place in the neighboring Parque Sarmiento .

Paseo de la Costa
A little outside the city of Buenos Aires in Vicente López was the temporarily built sports facility Paseo de la Costa , where the roller speed skating competitions and the BMX races were held.

Other sports facilities
In addition to the five main sports facilities, there were three sports facilities outside of Buenos Aires that were only used for individual sports. In the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2018 185 competitions were held in 28 sports and 31 disciplines, the IOC introduced this Diving and Swimming as Aquatics ( Water ) and rhythmic gymnastics , artistic gymnastics and trampolining as Gymnastics ( gymnastics ).

The demonstration sports included squash , karting and polo .
