At the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires , two inline speed skating competitions were held on October 7th and 8th . It was the first time this sport was played at an Olympic tournament.

The world championships in roller speed skating, which took place from July 1st to 3rd, 2018 in Heerde in the Netherlands, served as qualification .
The competitions were held in three disciplines: On the first day of the competition there was initially a sprint over 1000 meters, this was held in two runs, the eight fastest athletes in the preliminary round qualified for the final. Then there was an elimination race, similar to the elimination race in cycling. It went over a total of 5000 meters. On the second day of the competition, a sprint over 500 meters was finally held, this consisted of three laps, the fastest four made it to the final.
The performance of the participants was assessed with points: the first place in each discipline received 14 points, the last placed one point. In the end, the points from all disciplines were added up, and the three athletes with the highest total number of points received the medals.
