Chris Slade , real name Christopher Rees , (born October 30, 1946 in Pontypridd , Wales , United Kingdom ) is a British rock drummer . He became known through his work in bands such as Manfred Mann's Earth Band , AC / DC and Asia .

Career

In 1963 his career began with his friend from Welsh Tom Jones . He played drums in his band "The Squires". In addition, he played from 1965 with the Count Basie Band and Ted Heath. In 1969 he got out of The Squires and played at Toomorrow , where Olivia Newton-John acted as a singer. In 1971 he recorded albums with Tony Hazzard and Tom Paxton and in late 1970 became a founding member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band (MMEB), whose first album of the same name was not released until 1972. He stayed with the band for eight years and recorded eight albums with her.

Slade left MMEB in 1978 when Manfred Mann broke up the band. Together with bassist Colin Pattenden, who had left MMEB earlier, he founded the short-lived band Terra Nova with musicians Chris West, Dave Fishel and Peter Cox, which released their only self-titled album in 1980.

In 1979 he recorded an album each with Frankie Miller and Kai Olsson, before joining Uriah Heep in 1979 , where he immediately took part on the album Conquest . He then played in the bands of Gary Numan , Mick Ralph and David Gilmour . In late 1984 he merged with Jimmy Page , Paul Rodgers and Tony Franklin to form The Firm , but they did not have the expected success. In 1989 he went on tour with Gary Moore , on which Malcolm Young , rhythm guitarist for AC / DC , saw him play. Slade originally wanted to start a band with former Aerosmith guitarist Rick Dufay, but in early 1990 he accepted AC / DC's request to become their drummer. Slade left AC / DC in 1995 because the former drummer Phil Rudd returned there. Instead, he played with the progressive rock band Asia from 1999 to 2005 .

This was followed by an engagement with the British band Damage Control . Other band members of this band were Jonathan "Spike" Gray (vocals, The Quireboys ), Pete Way (bass, UFO ) and Robin George (guitar, vocals). He is also touring with the Michael Schenker Group .

Newer own projects are The Monsters Of Classic Rock . and Chris Slade Steel Circle

Time at AC / DC

Slade's debut album with AC / DC was The Razors Edge ; on the world tour of the same name he was seen live for the first time on AC / DC (November 2, 1990 - Worcester , USA / Centrum). He also appeared on their live DVD Live at Donington . Slade made a lasting impression on the band. Malcolm Young later said of Slade's musical abilities: "Slade was the only real musician in AC / DC" ( Slade was the only real musician in AC / DC. ). However, Phil Rudd replaced him on his return to the band in 1995. It was only since the 57th Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015 that Chris Slade has been the regular drummer of AC / DC again.
