Nightingales & Bombers is the sixth album by the British rock band Manfred Mann's Earth Band . It was released in 1975 and is the last album in the original line-up of the Earth Band.

The album

The title of the album comes from the recording of an ornithologist who wanted to record the voices of nightingales in Surrey during the Second World War and recorded the engine noise of a bomber squadron that happened to be flying overhead. This recording was used in the last track of the album As Above, So Below .

On the album, four songs alternate with four instrumental pieces, whereby the instrumental pieces in particular are dominated by Manfred Mann's synthesizer playing. The first song on the album Spirits in the Night is a cover version of the Bruce Springsteen album Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ. Mann used this album twice later; Blinded by the Light on the album The Roaring Silence a year later and For You on Chance from 1980. Another cover version is the rather calm Joan Armatrading song Visionary Mountains .

reception

Richard Foss writes on allmusic that turning to shorter tracks than on previous albums and using the Springsteen covers was an important step in the band's career. With the title track Nightingales and Bombers , Manfred Mann seems to be trying to get the crown of progressive rock . He gave the album four stars out of five.
