Mick Rogers (* 20th September 1946 in Dovercourt, Essex , England as Michael Oldroyd ) is an English guitarist . He gained fame primarily through his work with the Manfred Mann's Earth Band (MMEB), which he founded in 1971 together with Manfred Mann , Chris Slade and Colin Pattenden .

Career overview

Career start

Rogers first played the double bass , but then switched to guitar. He got his first professional engagements as a musician in the mid-sixties with Adam Faith , Gene Pitney and Normie Rowe & The Playboys in Australia . From 1967 he is a member of the band Procession, which in 1968 recorded a progressive album based on pop with strong jazz influences in England, which was produced by Mike Hugg. However, Procession split up in 1969 and Rogers briefly returned to Australia. There he formed a blues trio called Bulldog before returning to London in late 1970 to become a founding member of MMEB.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band between 1971 and 1975

From 1971 Mick Rogers published albums together with the MMEB in a regular and frequent sequence. At the first of these you can clearly feel that the band is still looking for their own style. From 1973 with the fourth album Solar Fire and the previous single Joybringer (not included on the album) , the first commercial success was achieved. Both publications are inspired by Gustav Holst's work The Planets . Two more albums follow, but great commercial success is a long time coming. The live concerts, on the other hand, are always the real factor that pulls the audience under its spell and creates a broad fan base for the band. But in 1975 Rogers had a hard time in the band because he felt that he would not be able to fully develop there. He's in the mood for music in the style of John McLaughlin or Frank Zappa and playing bass instead of guitar. He begins to work on the upcoming megahit for MMEB, the Bruce Springsteen title Blinded By The Light , but then leaves the band, also at the urging of the other members.

The period from 1975 to 1983

Rogers initially went back to Australia and founded his own project called Eclipse, which, however, only released one song as a single, Get Your Rocks Off , which was already on MMEB's third album Messin ' . Due to his connection from MMEB to the record company Bronze, he is offered a job with Uriah Heep , which is published by the same company. After a few weeks of rehearsal, Rogers decided against Uriah Heep and instead founded the band Aviator with Clive Bunker (formerly Jethro Tull ), Jack Lancaster and John G. Perry, which released an album each in 1979 and 1980. After that, however, the band ran out of money to continue working together. As a result, he approaches Manfred Mann again, with whom he had never lost contact and which ultimately led to his re-entry at MMEB. In the time between his two MMEB periods, Rogers also played with the following artists: Mike Hugg, Dave Greenslade , Simon Phillips , Tony Reeves, Colosseum II , Jack Lancaster, The Dave Kelly Band (replacing Tom McGuinness) and Joan Armatrading .

Manfred Mann's Earth Band 1983 - today

After the MMEB tour in 1983, guitarist Steve Waller got out there and Mick Rogers took his place. Two more MMEB albums follow, on which Rogers participates. However, the declining success of MMEB, which was commercially very successful in the time without Rogers, led to Manfred Mann initially breaking up the band in 1988. At the beginning of 1991 Mann reformed the band again and Rogers was there again. The band concentrates on the traditionally strong live work and is constantly touring Europe with a focus on Germany. In 1996 a studio album with the title Soft Vengeance was released and a live album from the following tour (1998). This is followed by more years with many live performances and in 2004 another album ( 2006 with Manfred Mann, released under the name "Manfred Mann '06 with Manfred Mann's Earth Band").

Solo work

In the course of his career, Rogers has also repeatedly released records under his own name. So z. B. in the mid-eighties, two singles, a solo album in 2002 and another CD in the following year. On March 15, 2013, the album Sharabang will be released , initially under the title The Guitarist .
