Manfred Mann (born October 21, 1940 in Johannesburg ; actually Manfred Sepse Lubowitz ) is a musician from South Africa who became known with the Manfred Mann band founded in 1962 and still plays with Manfred Mann's Earth Band , founded in 1971 .

Early years

Manfred Mann (1967)
Manfred Mann (1976 in Oslo)

Manfred Mann is the son of the printer David Lubowitz and the pianist Alma Cohen, both descendants of Jewish immigrants in the 1890s. In his youth he learned to play the piano, performed as a jazz musician in Johannesburg pubs, and together with his school friend Harry Miller recorded two LPs by the first South African rock 'n' roll band The Vikings (1959 and 1961), which also made it into the charts and studied classical music at Witwatersrand University . In 1961 Manfred Mann emigrated to England with Miller . One reason was his rejection of the apartheid regime in his homeland. He worked in Great Britain as a jazz pianist and music teacher and wrote under the pseudonym Manfred Manne articles, using the last name of the drummer Shelly Manne . Later he dropped the "e" and used the name Manfred Mann for his appearances.

The band Manfred Mann (Chapters I and II)

With the drummer Mike Hugg , with whom he played in a band, Manfred Mann founded the Mann Hugg Blues Brothers in 1962 , which were successful in the London club scene. In early 1963, the band, in which Manfred Mann played keyboard , signed a contract with the record label EMI . In the process, allegedly against Manfred Mann's will, the name of the band was changed to Manfred Mann . In 1966 singer Paul Jones , whose talent played a major role in the band's success, left the group to embark on a solo career. He was replaced by Mike d'Abo , who was preferred to Rod Stewart after rehearsals . This formation was in retrospect Manfred Mann Chapter II called, and the group with Paul Jones Chapter I . Other members were Tom McGuinness and Klaus Voormann . The band broke up in 1969 by mutual agreement, especially because individual members wanted to go other ways. Parts of the old band stayed together as The Manfreds for years .

Stylistically in jazz , soul and rhythm and blues settled, the band produced numerous, especially in the UK known hits such as My Name is Jack , Fox on the Run and Ha! Ha! Said the clown . Do Wah Diddy Diddy , a cover version of The Exciters , became a No. 1 hit in the United States in 1964 . Manfred Mann was also known for cover versions of Bob Dylan songs such as If You Got to Go, Go Now , Just Like a Woman and Mighty Quinn . Bob Dylan himself described the band as the best interpreters of his pieces, alongside the Byrds .

With cover versions of three Bruce Springsteen compositions that appeared on his debut album in 1973, namely Spirits in the Night , For You and Blinded by the Light , Mann later had big hits with the Earth Band.

Chapter III

Manfred Mann worked with Mike Hugg on a new project called Emanon (“no name” backwards) before the Manfred Mann band broke up . They produced two singles that were not released under the new project name, but under Manfred Mann & Mike Hugg . Both were used in advertising: The Michelin Theme (go radial, go Michelin) from 1969 for car tires and the ski '' Full Of Fitness '' theme for yogurt, which was only released in 1971 . Building on this, Mann founded Manfred Mann Chapter III, a band that only played compositions by Mann and Hugg, which stylistically stood out from the earlier pieces with their synthesizer jazz rock sounds. Two albums were released, but they were not very successful. While recording another album, Mann gave up the project and instead founded the Manfred Mann's Earth Band (MMEB for short), with which he turned to rock music from 1971.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band & other projects

Encouraged by the success of the Earth Band, Manfred Mann changed his style to more and more progressive, synthesizer-influenced rock, and later, from the late 1970s, turned significantly more to pop and mainstream . Although Manfred Mann's Earth Band is considered to be one of the most important bands in rock history, it disbanded in 1988 after a few commercial failures.

Now a reorientation towards a project called Manfred Mann's Plain Music followed . With Plains Music , an album was created with songs that are based almost exclusively on the songs and ethnic music of the North American Indians .

However, Mann reformed the Earth Band again in 1991, but with only occasional releases. Since then, the main focus has been on numerous and regular live performances.

In spring 1998, the band Massive Attack released the album Mezzanine with the title Black Milk on it . In early 1999, Mann sued Massive Attack for copyright infringement: Samples in Black Milk came from the title Tribute from Manfred Mann's Earth Band's debut album and were used without Mann's consent. A total of 120 of 128 bars were identical, the complete drum and hihat structures as well as the bass line were identical. Finally, an out-of-court agreement was reached and the exact amount of the compensation was agreed not to disclose; a sum in the region of 100,000 GBP was assumed.

In 2004, the album was released in 2006 , with which Manfred Mann implemented his new ideas in the studio as Manfred Mann '06 . He was supported by the Earth Band and renowned musicians such as Barbara Thompson ( Colosseum , paraphernalia) and the German rapper Thomas D .

In 2012 an album called Rational Anthems was announced. In April 2011, the pre-single Boots was released , which is only included on the later album on the "Deluxe Edition". The album was finally released on October 17, 2014 under the title Lone Arranger and the name Manfred Mann . Mann was featured on this album by current and former members of the Earth Band as well as numerous other musicians such as B. supported the trumpeter Till Brönner and Kris Kristofferson . Lone Arranger also includes covers of songs by Brian May , Bruce Springsteen and Prince .

Manfred Mann was also involved in other projects in the 1960s. His work on the keyboard and Moog synthesizers was particularly popular because of his special style.
